CORONAVIRUS UPDATE… The number of confirmed coronavirus cases in the U.S. has reached 5,482,370 and the nation’s death toll stands at 171,808 according to figures released last night by Johns Hopkins University… The University of Notre Dame announced yesterday that the positive tests of 80 students on Monday is forcing the school to move its undergraduate classes online for two weeks. Students won’t be sent home in the meantime. The school had re-opened classes earlier this month.

DEMOCRATIC CONVENTION DAY 2… Democrats officially nominated Joe Biden for president in a virtual roll call vote last night on Day 2 of their convention. Biden’s wife, Dr. Jill Biden, spoke from the Delaware high school where she used to teach. Former Secretary of State Colin Powell contributed his endorsement of Biden. Cindy McCain, the widow of the late Republican senator John McCain, narrated a video celebrating the “unlikely friendship” between Biden and her husband. Former president Bill Clinton went on the offensive with his claim that in the Trump administration, “there is only chaos.”

SENATE PANEL RELEASES RUSSIA REPORT… The Senate Select Committee on Intelligence revealed troubling findings yesterday by releasing the final installment of its years-long investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election. The report concluded that Russia used Trump’s campaign manager Paul Manafort, the WikiLeaks website and other sources to influence the election in favor of Donald Trump. Manafort allegedly collaborated with Russian oligarch Oleg Deripaska, Russian intelligence operative Konstantin Kilimnik and others before during and after the election. The bipartisan report found that Russian President Vladimir Putin personally directed the Russian efforts to hack computer networks and accounts affiliated with the Democratic Party and leak information damaging to Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton.

POSTAL SERVICE SUSPENDS CHANGES… Postmaster General Louis DeJoy announced yesterday that the U.S. Postal Service is suspending several of its recent changes until after the November election “to avoid even the appearance of any impact on election mail.” DeJoy, who will be questioned about the moves by a House panel on Friday, says the postal service will cease removing mailboxes, closing processing facilities and reducing retail hours. Additionally, he said, a leadership task force will be expanded and standby resources activated to ensure the postal service can handle the predicted surge of mail ahead of the election.

STATE OF EMERGENCY IN CALIFORNIA… California Governor Gavin Newsom yesterday declared a state of emergency amid an extreme heat wave that has brought dozens of wildfires. The declaration is statewide and intended to quicken access to resources in battling blazes. A complex of about 20 lightning-sparked wildfires in Northern California has prompted evacuations in five counties. The complex grew to 25,000 acres yesterday and was 0 percent contained.

… Federal prosecutors are seeking a two-month sentence for actress Lori Loughlin and a five-month sentence for her fashion-designer husband Mossimo Giannulli for their roles in the 2019 college admissions scandal. At yesterday’s sentencing hearing, prosecutors also called for Loughlin to pay a $150,000 fine and complete 100 community service hours, and for Giannulli to pay a $250,000 fine and complete 250 community service hours. The couple agreed pleaded guilty in May to charges related to a scheme to secure their daughters’ admission to the University of Southern California.

NBC EXECUTIVE RESIGNS… NBCUniversal Vice Chairman Ron Meyer announced he has resigned in response to an extortion attempt related to an extramarital affair. The 75-year-old Meyer revealed that he reached a settlement “under threat, with a woman outside the company who had made false accusations against me.” Meyer headed the Universal film studio from 1995 to 2012 and has remained at the company in a lesser role since.

HOUSTON 2 – Colorado
1 (11 innings)… Myles Straw singled home the winning run in the bottom of the 11th inning to lift the Astros over the Rockies. Houston starter Zack Greinke and his counterpart Anthony Senzatela both pitched eight scoreless innings.

San Diego 6 – TEXAS 4… Wil Myers unloaded a grand slam in the top of the first inning, Jurickson Profar added a two-run shot in the fourth and the Padres coasted past the Rangers.

San Francisco 8 – L.A. ANGELS 2… The Giants cruised past the Angels to end their five-game skid. Pablo Sandoval homered with a runner aboard and doubled home a run. Mike Yastrzemski smacked a solo homer.

Cleveland 6 – PITTSBURGH 3 (10 innings)… Carlos Santana’s three-run homer in the top of the 10th inning sent the Indians past the Pirates.

Washington 8 – ATLANTA 5… Eric Thames had a couple of hits and drove in three runs to lead the Nationals past the Braves.

CHI. WHITE SOX 10 – Detroit 4… Tim Anderson went 4-for-5 with a homer and three RBIs as the White Sox pounded the Tigers. Jose Abreu had three hits and knocked in three runs.

ARIZONA 10 – Oakland 1… The Diamondbacks opened with a five-run bottom of the first inning and never looked back in their thrashing of the Athletics. Nick Ahmed went 3-for-4 with a homer and five RBIs. Kole Calhoun also went deep. Luke Weaver (1-3) allowed a run on three hits over rive innings.

Tampa Bay 6 – N.Y. YANKEES 3… Brandon Lowe homered with two runners aboard to cap a four-run top of the third inning and the Rays doubled up on the Yankees. Austin Meadows also homered for Tampa Bay.

L.A. DODGERS 2 – Seattle 1… Austin Barnes stole second and scored on Corey Seager’s tie-breaking RBI single in the bottom of the eighth inning and the Dodgers hung on to edge the Mariners. L.A. starter Tony Gonsolin pitched two-hit ball over six shutout innings.

N.Y. Mets 8 – MIAMI 3… Amed Rosario homered with the bases empty and stroked a two-run single as the Mets ripped the Marlins. Brandon Nimmo had three hits, including a solo homer, and drove one two runs.

Toronto 8 – BALTIMORE 7 (10 innings)… The Blue Jays recovered to outlast the Orioles after blowing a four-run lead. Yuli Gurriel’s grounder in the top of the 10th inning brought home Travis Shaw with the decisive run.

Philadelphia 13 – BOSTON 6… The Phillies erupted to score seven runs in the top of the sixth inning on their way past the Red Sox. Bryce Harper blasted a three-run homer. Jay Bruce added a two-run shot. Rhys Hoskins and Phil Gosselin hit solo homers.

MINNESOTA 4 – Milwaukee 3 (12 innings)… The Twins outlasted the Brewers after blowing a 3-0 ninth-inning lead. Starter Kenta Maeda took a ho-hitter into the final frame and departed after giving up an Eric Sogard leadoff single. Byron Buxton raced home with the tie-breaking run in the top of the 12th on Jorge Polanco’s grounder against a five-man infield.

CHI. CUBS 6 – St. Louis 3… Ian Happ drilled a solo homer and Kyle Schwarber added a two-run shot as the Cubs cruised past he Cardinals. Yu Darvish (4-1) surrendered a run on eight hits over six innings.

Miami 113 – Indiana 101… The Heat pulled away in the fourth quarter to down the Pacers. Jimmy Butler scored a game-high 28 points. Goran Dragic tossed in 24 points. Game 2 is tomorrow.

… James Harden scored 37 points and brought down 11 rebounds in leading the Rockets past the Thunder. Jeff Green came off the bench to deliver 22 points. Game 2 is tomorrow.

Portland 100 – L.A. Lakers 93… The Trail Blazers came up big in the second half to stun the Lakers. Damian Lillard led all scorers with 34 points. CJ McCollum tossed in 21 points. Game 2 is tomorrow.

Washington 3 – N.Y. Islanders 2… Alex Ovechkin’s second goal of the game broke a third-period tie and the Capitals held off the Islanders to avoid a series sweep. Eugeny Kuznetsov had a goal and an assist. Game 5 is tomorrow.

Dallas 2 – Calgary 1… John Klingberg scored a tying goal early in the third period and the Stars made it stand to take a 3-2 lead in the series. Goalie Anton Khudobin made 28 saves. Game 6 is tomorrow.

Vegas 4 – Chicago 3… Alex Tuch scored early in the third period to break a tie and the Golden Knights hung on to eliminate the Blackhawks with a Game 5 victory. Max Pacioretty had a goal and an assist.
