CORONAVIRUS UPDATES… The number of confirmed coronavirus cases in the U.S. has reached 21,574,043 and the nation’s death toll stands at 365,208, according to figures released last night by Johns Hopkins University… The COVID Tracking Project reported 1.9 million tests, 266,000 cases, 132,370 hospitalizations and a record 4,033 deaths yesterday. The seven-day average for deaths topped 2,750, also a record. As of yesterday, roughly 6 million people across the U.S. have been given the first of two vaccine shots, with more than 21 million doses distributed nationwide… Pennsylvania yesterday announced its first confirmed case of the infectious coronavirus variant first detected in the United Kingdom. The variant has been found in at least seven other states.

TRUMP PROMISES SMOOTH TRANSITION… President Trump for the first time yesterday acknowledged his loss in November’s presidential election by announcing that “a new administration will be inaugurated on January 20th. My focus now turns to ensuring a smooth, orderly and seamless transition of power.” Trump made the comments in a videotaped message amid growing calls for his resignation or removal following Wednesday’s attack on the U.S. Capitol. Lawmakers are considering invoking the 25th Amendment or impeaching Trump for a second time.

DEATH TOLL REACHES 5 IN CAPITOL ATTACK… The death toll from Wednesday’s storming of the Capitol reached five yesterday with the passing of a U.S. Capitol policeman who was reportedly struck with a fire extinguisher. At least 69 people so far have been charged with crimes related to the siege. Washington, D.C., Mayor Muriel Bowser called on the Joint Terrorism Task Force to investigate “acts of domestic terrorism and sedition.”

RESIGNATIONS CONTINUE FOLLOWING CAPITOL SEIGE… Education Secretary Betsy DeVos and Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao both resigned yesterday in response to the insurrection on Capitol Hill and President Trump’s response to it. Senate Sergeant-at-Arms Michael Stenger and House Sergeant-at-Arms Paul Irving also resigned under heavy criticism. President Trump yesterday withdrew his nomination of Chad Wolf as secretary of homeland security just hours after Wolf urged Trump to condemn the attack.

BOEING TO PAY $2.5B IN 737 MAX SETTLEMENT… Boeing has agreed pay $2.5 billion to settle a Justice Department investigation and admit that employees misled regulators about the safety of its 737 Max aircraft. Two of the planes crashed shortly after the 737 Max entered airline service. The settlement includes money for the crash victims’ families, airline customers and a fine. Prosecutors accused Boeing employees of giving the Federal Aviation Administration misleading statements and half-truths about safety issues with the plane and then covering up their actions.

ACTRESS MARION RAMSEY DIES
… Actress Marion Ramsey, who was best known for her work in the “Police Academy” films and the 1978 Broadway production of “Eubie!,” died yesterday at her Los Angeles home. She was 73. Ramsey’s television credits included the variety show “Keep On Truckin’” and “Cos,” with one-off roles on “Beverly Hills, 90210” and “MacGyver.” Ramsey appeared in the first six “Police Academy” movies beginning in 1984.

‘MEAN GIRLS’ WON’T RESUME ON BROADWAY… Producers announced yesterday that the Broadway production of “Mean Girls” won’t resume when productions reopen in New York. However, the show still plans a national tour beginning this summer. The final performance of the popular Broadway show was March 11. The show played 833 performances since opening April 8, 2018.

… The Nets cruised past the 76ers despite playing without Kyrie Irving and Kevin Durant. Joe Harris came off the bench and scored 28 points. Caris LeVert had 22 points and 10 assists.

Cleveland 94 – MEMPHIS 90… The Cavaliers came up big in the fourth quarter to get past the Grizzlies. Andre Drummond powered his way to 22 points and 15 rebounds.

Dallas 124 – DENVER 117 (OT)… Luka Doncic scored 38 points and dished off 13 assists as the Mavericks outlasted the Nuggets.

San Antonio 118 – L.A. LAKERS 109… The Spurs got a game-high 28 points from LaMarcus Aldridge in downing the Lakers. Five other players scored in double figures for San Antonio.

PORTLAND 135 – Minnesota 117… The Trail Blazers bombed the Timberwolves 47-27 in the second quarter and coasted to the victory. Damian Lillard poured in 39 points. CJ McCollum tossed in 20 points.

MLB NEWS… The New York Mets have acquired shortstop Francisco Lindor and pitcher Carlos Carrasco in a trade with the Cleveland Indians. In exchange, Cleveland gets infielders Andres Gimenez and Amed Rosario, pitcher Josh Wolf and outfielder Isaiah Greene.. The 27-year-old Lindor is a four-time All-Star and considered one of baseball’s best all-around players. He’s a career .285 hitter and averaged 29 homers, 86 RBIs and 21 steals in his six major league seasons. The 33-year-old Carrasco overcame leukemia to become one of the AL’s steadiest starters. He has an 88-73 career record with a 3.73 ERA.
