CORONAVIRUS UPDATES… The number of confirmed coronavirus cases in the U.S. has reached 23,071,895 and the nation’s death toll stands at 384,653, according to figures released last night by Johns Hopkins University… Researchers at Ohio State University have discovered a new coronavirus variant that carries a mutation identical to the strain found in the U.K. that has been detected in 11 states. Researchers said they also found another U.S. strain with three other gene mutations that were not previously seen.

TRUMP IMPEACHED FOR THE SECOND TIME… The House impeached President Trump for a second time yesterday in charging him with high crimes and misdemeanors. Democrats had the support of 10 Republicans in the 232-197 vote. House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer said the chamber will immediately send the article of impeachment to the Senate. The article argues Trump fed his supporters months of false claims that widespread fraud cost him the 2020 election, then urged them to contest the results before they marched to the Capitol and disrupted Congress’ count of President-elect Joe Biden’s win.

DEMS CALL FOR INVESTIGATION INTO CAPITOL TOURS… A coalition of more than 30 House Democrats is calling for an investigation into “suspicious” Capitol tours that took place the day before last Wednesday’s attack on the U.S. Capitol. Coalition leader Mikie Sherrill said the tours appeared to have been reconnaissance missions. Democrats note that some of the visitors encountered by lawmakers “appeared to be associated” with the “Stop the Steal” rally at the White House the next day.

FAA WANTS STRICTER PENALTIES FOR UNRULY AIRLINE PASSENGERS… The Federal Aviation Administration announced yesterday that it will impose stricter penalties against unruly and combative airline passengers. An order signed by FAA administrator Steve Dickson calls for “a special emphasis enforcement program” to bring civil legal enforcement of fines of up to $35,000 and possible addition to the Transportation Security Administration’s no-fly list for “passengers who assault, threaten, intimidate or interfere with a crewmember in the performance of a crewmember’s duties.” The FAA said in a statement that it was seeking harsher civil penalties due to a recent increase in unruly behavior.

FORMER MICHIGAN GOVERNOR CHARGED… Prosecutors have charged former Michigan governor Rick Snyder for his role in the Flint water crisis. Snyder, who served from 2011 to 2018, faces a year in jail and a $1,000 fine if convicted of willful neglect of duty, a misdemeanor. On Snyder’s watch, the city of Flint changed water sources without taking appropriate measures and high levels of lead in the drinking water left a dozen residents dead and many other sickened.

ARMIE HAMMER LEAVES JENNIFER LOPEZ FILM
… Actor Armie Hammer is leaving his role opposite Jennifer Lopez in the upcoming film “Shotgun Wedding” due to backlash he has faced on social media. Hammer was a trending topic last weekend after someone posted unverified direct Instagram messages that appeared to be written by Hammer and expressed graphic sexual fantasies, including cannibalism. The actor said the messages amounted to “vicious and spurious online attacks” against him.

ACTRESS JESSICA CAMPBELL DIES… Former actress Jessica Campbell, who was best known for her appearance alongside Reese Witherspoon in the 1999 film “Election,” died unexpectedly on December 29 in Portland, Oregon, her family announced yesterday. She was 38. Campbell also portrayed Amy Andrews in the first and only season of “Freaks And Geeks” in 2000. Later, Campbell left her acting career behind to become a naturopathy doctor.

NHL OPENING-DAY SCOREBOARD

PHILADELPHIA 6 – Pittsburgh 3… The Flyers closed with three straight goals in the third period to double up on the Penguins. Six different players found the net. Joel Farabee scored a goal and had three assists.

TORONTO 5 – Montreal 4 (OT)… Morgan Rielly scored at 3:24 of overtime to lift the Maple Leafs over the Canadiens. Jimmy Vesey netted the tying goal midway through the third period. William Nylander found the net twice and had an assist.

TAMPA BAY 5 – Chicago 1… The Lightning scored three power-play goals in cruising past the Blackhawks to mount their defense of the Stanley Cup. Steven Stamkos had a goal and two assists.

Vancouver 5 – EDMONTON 3… Brock Boeser scored the final two of the Canucks’ three third-period goals in putting away the Oilers. Tanner Pearson and Quinn Hughes both assisted on two goals.

St. Louis 4 – COLORADO 2… Oskar Sundqvist found the net twice to lead the Blues past the Avalanche. Robert Thomas set up two goals.

Brooklyn 116 – NEW YORK 109… The Nets took control with a big second quarter and held off the Knicks. Kevin Durant pumped in 26 points. Bruce Brown finished with 15 points and 14 rebounds.

Memphis 118 – MINNESOTA 107… The Grizzlies bombed the Timberwolves 38-17 in the fourth quarter to pull out the victory. Jonas Valanciunas powered his way to 24 points and 16 boards.

L.A. Lakers 128 – OKLAHOMA CITY 99… The Lakers routed the Thunder in winning their seventh straight on the road to start the season. LeBron James led the way with 26 points. Montrezl Harrell delivered 21 points off the bench.

L.A.. CLIPPERS 111 – New Orleans 106… The Clippers used a big second quarter to build a 17-point halftime lead and hung on to top the Pelicans. They got 28 points from Kawhi Leonard and 27 from Paul George.

Portland 132 – SACRAMENTO 126… Damian Lillard scored eight of his game-high 40 points in the final four minutes and dished off 13 assists to lead the Trail Blazers in a come-from-behind win over the Kings. CJ McCollum dropped in 28 points.

NBA NEWS… ESPN reported last night that James Harden is heading from the Houston Rockets to the Brooklyn Nets as part of a four-team trade that also involves the Indiana Pacers and Cleveland Cavaliers. Houston a package from Brooklyn that included Caris LeVert, Rodions Kurucs and draft picks. The Rockets then traded LeVert to the Pacers for Victor Oladipo. The the Rockets receive Cavaliers guard Dante Exum Center Jarrett Allen and forward Taurean Prince. The Rockets also get Cleveland’s 2022 first-round pick, via the Milwaukee Bucks, and Houston is sending a 2023 second-round pick to the Pacers. Brooklyn also gets a 2024 second-round pick from the Cavaliers.
