The Rundown for February 9, 2021

CORONAVIRUS UPDATES… The number of confirmed coronavirus cases in the U.S. has reached 27,097,106 and the nation’s death toll stands at 465,072, according to figures released last night by Johns Hopkins University… The nation’s leading infectious diseases expert, Dr. Anthony Fauci, urged Americans to get both doses of the coronavirus vaccine for greater protection against the coronavirus variant first discovered in the U.K. Fauci emphasized the need to vaccinate as many people as possible in the shortest amount of time… Nearly three out of four people in the U.S. plan to continue wearing masks in public even after the COVID-19 pandemic ends, according to a survey conducted by Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center. Four out of five said they also will continue to avoid crowds, and 90 percent of participants said they will maintain frequent hand-washing and sanitizer use after the coronavirus has been contained.

TRUMP SECOND IMPEACHMENT BEGINS TODAY… The Senate impeachment trial of former President Trump begins today with opening arguments. Trump is facing a charge of “incitement of insurrection” passed by the House last month following the attack on the U.S. Capitol. His lawyers deny Trump encouraged the violence and blamed it on “a small group of criminals.” House impeachment managers, meanwhile, maintain that the evidence of Trump’s conduct “is overwhelming.” Democrats would need the support of 17 Republicans to gain the two-thirds majority needed for a conviction.

CONGRESSMAN RON WRIGHT DIES… Republican Congressman Ron Wright died of COVID-19 on Sunday, his family confirmed yesterday. He was 67. Wright, revealed his COVID-19 diagnosis on January 21, is the first sitting member of Congress to die of COVID-19. He was elected to represent Texas’ 6th congressional district in 2018 and was re-elected in November. Wright was a member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee and the House Education and Labor Committee.

RICHARD SHELBY TO GIVE UP SENATE SEAT… Senator Richard Shelby of Alabama announced yesterday that he won’t run for re-election in 2022. He joins fellow Republicans Rob Portman of Ohio, Pat Toomey of Pennsylvania and Richard Burr of North Carolina in announcing they are giving up their Senate seats. The 86-year-old Shelby has been in Congress for 42 years and has chaired the Appropriations, Rules, Banking, and Intelligence committees over the course of his career.

CBO ANALYZES MINIMUM WAGE HIKE… Raising the federal minimum wage to $15 per hour would boost wages for some 17 million people and raise 900,000 U.S. workers out of poverty, but cost the United States 1.4 million jobs by 2025, according to an analysis released yesterday by the Congressional Budget Office. The analysis found that in addition to boosting the wages of millions of minimum wage earners, another 10 million who are “otherwise earning slightly” more than $15 per hour also could get a pay increase. Overall consumer demand for goods and services would also be boosted, the report said, because “lower-income families spend a larger proportion of any additional income on goods and services than do families with higher income.” However, faced with higher wages, employers might also have an incentive to invest in technology or machinery that cut jobs completely as wages rose.
