CORONAVIRUS UPDATES… The number of confirmed coronavirus cases in the U.S. has reached 29,152,716 and the nation’s death toll stands at 529,203, according to figures released last night by Johns Hopkins University… The House approved the final version of the $1.9 trillion COVID relief bill yesterday, clearing its path for President Joe Biden’s signature. The vote was 220 to 211, with not one Republican supporting it… The White House announced plans yesterday to double its order of the single-shot Johnson & Johnson coronavirus vaccine with an additional 100 million doses. President Biden will direct the Department of Health and Human Services to secure the additional supply… A late-stage study shows that a two-drug antibody cocktail treatment has proven 87-percent effective in reducing risks of coronavirus-related hospitalizations and deaths in high-risk patients. Pharma company Eli Lilly said that bamlanivimab and etesevimab, when taken together, greatly helped COVID-19 patients in a third-stage study.

SENATE CONFIRMATIONS… The Senate voted 70-30 yesterday to confirm Merrick Garland as attorney general. The former chief judge of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the DC Circuit pledged in his nomination hearing last month to “fend off any effort by anyone” to politically influence the Justice Department’s investigations. He identified his first priority as prosecuting the “heinous” crimes committed in the January 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol. The Senate also confirmed Ohio Congresswoman Marcia Fudge as the next U.S. secretary of housing and urban development. The vote was 66-34. Finally, the Senate voted 66-34 in confirming Michael Regan as EPA administrator.

AUDIO CAPTURES TRUMP PRESSURING ELECTION INVESTIGATOR… Audio obtained by the Wall Street Journal and released yesterday capture former President Donald Trump pressuring the a Georgia elections investigator over November’s election results. The pressure was applied during a December 23 phone call between Trump and Frances Watson, the chief investigator at the Georgia secretary of state’s office. In a recording of the call, Trump insists he won Georgia’s presidential election and warns Watson that “the country is counting on” an audit that was launched to determine whether the signature verification process for mail ballots was done properly in Fulton County. The release of the audio comes amid a criminal investigation of Trump’s efforts to overturn election results in Georgia, which he lost by 11,779 votes. The Fulton County district attorney’s office launched the investigation last month.

HAWAII FLOODING PROMPTS STATE OF EMERGENCY… Hawaii Governor David Ige has declared a state of emergency following severe flooding that prompted evacuations and damaged homes across the state’s islands. The state is expected to face extreme weather through tomorrow. Officials in Maui say intense rainfall damaged bridges, toppled a century-old dam and left several roads impassable.

SUSPECTED MURDERER OF 5 ARRESTED… U.S. Marshals in St. Louis have arrested a man wanted in connection to five murders in two states. 47-year-old Sean Lannon is suspected of killing his ex-wife and three other people, whose bodies were discovered Friday at an airport parking garage in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Lannon is also the suspect in the murder of a man in East Greenwich Township, New Jersey, on Monday.

ENTERTAINMENT
AMERICA FERRERA RETURNING FOR ‘SUPERSTORE’ FINALE
… America Ferrera is returning to the cast of the sitcom “Superstore” for its hourlong series finale on March 25. NBC confirmed in December that the series would end with its current sixth season. Ferrera departed the series in February 2020 before the Season 5 finale, but she guest-starred in the first two episodes of Season 6. The show centered employees of a big box discount store. It stars Ben Feldman, Lauren Ash, Colton Dunn, Nico Santos, Nichole Sakura, Kaliko Kauahi and Mark McKinney.

CASSETTE INVENTOR DIES… Lou Ottens, the Dutch engineer credited with inventing the audio cassette tape, died last weekend at age 94, family members have confirmed. Ottens invented the cassette while the head of Philips’ product development department and it immediately transformed the way people listened to music following its introduction at the Berlin Radio electronics fair in 1963. An estimated 100 billion cassette tapes have been sold worldwide.

MEMPHIS 127 – Washington 112… The Grizzlies rolled past the Wizards to open the NBA season’s second half. Jonas Valanciunas had game-highs with 29 points and 20 rebounds. Ja Morant tossed in 21 points and dished off 10 assists. Desmond Bane added 20 points.

DALLAS 115 – San Antonio 104… The Mavericks finished with a 17-4 run to upend the Spurs. Kristaps Porzingis pumped in 28 points and grabbed 14 boards. Luka Doncic finished with 22 points and 12 assists.

COLORADO 2 – Arizona 1 (OT)… Gabriel Landeskog scored at 4:22 of overtime to send the Avalanche past the Coyotes. Brandon Saad opened the scoring 1:23 into the contest.

Los Angeles 5 – ANAHEIM 1… Adrian Kempe netted two goals as the Kings skated past the Ducks. Goalie Troy Grosenick made his first NHL appearance in nearly 6-1/2 years and stopped 33 shots.

Montreal 5 – VANCOUVER 1… Jasperi Kotkaniemi had a goal and an assist in the Canadiens’ thrashing of the Canucks. Tyler Toffoli assisted on two goals.
