The Rundown for March 16, 2021

CORONAVIRUS UPDATES… The number of confirmed coronavirus cases in the U.S. has reached 29,494,312 and the nation’s death toll stands at 535,609, according to figures released last night by Johns Hopkins University… A Reuters analysis found that the number of deaths from COVID-19 last week declined by 22 percent. Meanwhile, the number of vaccinations reached a record 2.4 million shots per day… Nearly 90 percent of Americans who received the first dose of a vaccine through February have completed the two-dose cycle, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said yesterday. Among those who received both shots of the two-dose vaccines, 96 percent received the second dose within the recommended time frame.

HAALAND CONFIRMED AS INTERIOR SECRETARY… The Senate voted 51-40 yesterday to confirm Deb Haaland as Secretary of the Interior. The 60-year-old New Mexico Democratic congresswoman becomes the first Native American Cabinet secretary in U.S. history. Tribal groups, environmental organizations and lawmakers praised her selection but she faced strong resistance from Republicans due to her opposition to fossil fuels and stances on various other environmental issues.

2 ARRESTED FOR ATTACKS ON CAPITOL POLICE… The Justice Department yesterday announced that two men have been arrested and charged for assaulting U.S. Capitol Police Officer Brian Sicknick during the January 6 attack. Sicknick died trying to defend the Capitol from a mob. 32-year-old Julian Elie Khater, of Pennsylvania, and 39-year-old George Pierre Tanios, of West Virginia, allegedly teamed up to spray Sicknick and other officers with a toxic chemical spray during the attack. The two men are charged with nine counts.

CATHOLICS CAN’T BLESS SAME-SEX MARRIAGES… The Vatican decreed yesterday that the Roman Catholic Church cannot bless same-sex marriages, no matter how stable or positive the couples’ relationships are. In a message approved by Pope Francis, the church says its answer regarding same-sex couples “declares illicit any form of blessing that tends to acknowledge their unions as such.” The church has long maintained that marriage should be limited to a union between a man and a woman, saying that same-sex unions involve “sexual activity outside of marriage.”

3 KILLED BY CAR ON SIDEWALK… Three people were killed and six others were injured yesterday morning when a 71-year-old man drove his car onto a sidewalk and into a group of people. The driver, Craig Voss, is being held on three counts of vehicular manslaughter, five counts of causing great bodily injury while committing a felony and one count of driving under the influence, San Diego Police Chief David Nisleit said at an afternoon press conference. Nisleit characterized the victims as homeless people seeking shelter from the rain in a tunnel.
