CORONAVIRUS UPDATES… The number of confirmed coronavirus cases in the U.S. has reached 30,845,12 and the nation’s death toll stands at 556,509, according to figures released last night by Johns Hopkins University… President Joe Biden announced yesterday that he is moving up his deadline for states to make all American adults eligible for a coronavirus vaccine by April 19, which is weeks ahead of an original May 1 deadline… Texas Governor Greg Abbott yesterday issued an executive order that prohibits state agencies and certain private businesses from requiring patrons to possess COVID-19 “vaccine passports.” Abbott argued in a social-media post that no Texans should be forced to show private health information to conduct daily activities.

U.S.-IRAN TALKS ‘CONSTRUCTIVE’… The leader of the Iranian delegation at meetings in Vienna, Austria, expressed limited optimism yesterday following indirect talks with the U.S. over the return to the 2015 nuclear deal. Iranian delegate Abbas Araqchi told state-run Press TV that the talks were “constructive” and that parties will hold further negotiations on the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action on Friday. Araqchi did condemn the U.S.’ dismissal of Tehran’s demand for sanctions to be lifted as a condition for the deal’s return. The meetings in Vienna are being hosted by the European Union.

FORMER TRUMP APPOINTEE GIVEN 4-YEAR BAN… Former Housing and Urban Development regional administrator Lynne Patton has agreed to a four-year ban from federal employment after an investigation found she violated the Hatch Act, which prevents federal employees from using their office for personal gain. Patton, who was appointed to the post by former president Trump after shed previously served as the party planner at the wedding of Trump’s son Eric, must also pay a $1,000 fine. The investigation was launched in response to a complaint filed by the watchdog group Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington. The complaint centered on a video capturing New York City tenants talking about how bad New York’s federal housing was. Patton later turned the video into a two-minute clip that aired at the Republican National Convention and was used to promote Trump and bash New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio, even though the people who had been interviewed insisted that they hated Trump.

CONGRESSMAN ALCEE HASTINGS DIES… Longtime U.S. congressman from Florida Alcee Hastings died yesterday following a two-year battle with pancreatic cancer. He was 84. Hastings was elected in 1992 as the first African American elected to Congress in Florida since the post-Civil War period after a bribery scandal led to his impeachment as a federal judge appointed by Jimmy Carter in 1979. In November, he was re-elected for his 15th term in the House after pulling in 78.7 percent of the vote and held senior posts on the House Rules Committee and the Helsinki Commission, which works with other countries on a variety of multinational issues. His heavily-Democratic district currently includes parts of Fort Lauderdale, Palm Beach and the area around Lake Okeechobee. Governor Ron DeSantis will call a special election in the coming months to fill the vacancy. In the meantime, Hasting’s death lowers the Democrats’ majority in the House to 218-211.

SAILOR GUNNED DOWN AFTER INJURING 2 IN MARYLAND SHOOTINGS… Police yesterday morning fatally shot a Navy sailor who shot and injured two other sailors at a Navy-linked facility in Frederick, Maryland. Authorities say the officers encountered the shooter after he drove to nearby Fort Detrick. The gunman reportedly used a rifle but no additional information on the weapon was released.

… Helen Mirren has signed on to star as Golda Meir in in an upcoming biopic by Oscar-winning Israeli-born director Guy Nattiv. “Golda” tells the story of Israel’s first woman prime minister as she is forced to make crucial decisions during 1973’s Yom Kippur War after Egypt, Syria and Jordan launched a surprise attack on the Sinai Peninsula and the Golan Heights. Producers are eyeing an October production start date. Nattiv’s 2018 feature film “Skin” won the Academy Award for Best Live Action Short Film. Mirren won the Best Actress Oscar for her portrayal of Queen Elizabeth II in the 2006 film “The Queen.” She also has received Academy Award nominations for work in the films “Gosford Park,” “The Last Station” and “The Madness of King George.”

JULIA ROBERTS-GEORGE CLOONEY ROMCOM GETS RELEASE… The upcoming Julia Roberts-George Clooney romantic comedy “Ticket to Paradise” is scheduled to hit theaters on September 30, 2022. Roberts and Clooney will play a divorced couple who try to stop their lovestruck daughter from repeating their mistakes. The Universal release also stars Billie Lourd.


DETROIT 4 – Minnesota 3 (10 innings)… Akil Baddoo singled home Harold Castro with the winning run in the bottom of the 10th inning to send the Tigers past the Twins. Robbie Grossman knocked in a pair of runs with a double and a single.

WASHINGTON 6 – Atlanta 5… Juan Soto’s single in the bottom of the ninth inning scored Victor Robles and made a winner out of the Nationals in their delayed season opener. Trea Turner homered with a runner aboard and Jonathan Lucroy doubled home two runs for Washington.

Houston 4 – L.A. ANGELS 2… Carlos Correa belted a tie-breaking two-run homer in the top of the ninth inning to push the Astros past the Angels. Houston tied the game in the second on back-to-back solo homers by Kyle Tucker and Aledmys Diaz.

N.Y. YANKEES 7 – Baltimore 2… Gerrit Cole (1-0) pitched four-hit ball and struck out 13 in a dominant performance that carried the Yankees past the orioles. Aaron Judge singled home a run and blasted a three-run homer. Jay Bruce also went deep.

CINCINNATI 14 – Pittsburgh 1… Tyler Naquin homered twice and drove in seven runs to lead the Reds in their shredding of the Pirates. Jonathan India went 3-for-4 with four RBIs.

St. Louis 4 – MIAMI 2… The Cardinals eased past the Marlins after spotting them an early two-run lead. Yadier Molina lifted a go-ahead sacrifice fly to cap a three-run top of the sixth inning. Dylan Carlson added a solo homer.

N.Y. Mets 8 – PHILADELPHIA 4… The Mets put together a four-run top of the seventh inning in doubling up on the Phillies. Dominic Smith and Pete Alonso hit two-run homers.

BOSTON 6 – Tampa Bay 5 (12 innings)… J.D. Martinez’ two-run double in the bottom of the 12th inning gave the Red Sox a hard-fought win over the Rays. Christian Vazquez hit a game-tying homer in the bottom of the ninth inning and Rafael Devers singled home another tying run in the 11th.

Milwaukee 4 – CHI. CUBS 0… Freddy Peralta (1-0) and two relievers combined on a one-hitter and the Brewers cruised past the Cubs. Travis Shaw drilled a three-run homer in the top of the first inning. Omar Narváez added a solo shot in the fourth.

TEXAS 7 – Toronto 4… Nick Lowe connected for a pair of two-run homers and the Rangers got solo blasts from Ronald Guzmán and Jonah Heim in downing the Blue Jays. Starter Dane Dunning (1-0) allowed a run on three hits over five innings.

L.A. Dodgers 5 – OAKLAND 1… Clayton Kershaw (1-1) gave up just a run on four hits over seven innings in a strong effort and the Dodgers dealt the Athletics their sixth straight loss to start the season. Max Muncy homered with a runner aboard. Edwin Rios and Mookie Betts added solo shots.

SAN DIEGO 3 – San Francisco 1… Victor Caratini’s tie-breaking two-run homer in the bottom of the seventh inning muscled the Padres past the Giants. Starter Yu Darvish pitched six strong innings but didn’t get a decision.

Arizona 10 – COLORADO 8 (13 innings)… Stephen Vogt singled home a run and Ketel Marte doubled home two more as the Diamondbacks scored three runs in the top of the 13th inning to outlast the Rockies after blowing one-run leads in the 10th and 12th innings. Vogt also hit a two-run homer in the seventh. Christian Walker homered with a runner aboard in the sixth.

Chi. White Sox 10 – SEATTLE 4… Jose Abreu unloaded a grand slam, Zack Collins hit a three-run homer and Luis Robert added a two-run shot as the White Sox pounded the Mariners. Abreu also lifted a sacrifice fly.

MLB MOVES ALL-STAR GAME… Major League Baseball yesterday confirmed that the 2021 All-Star Game has been Coors Field in Denver. The move comes days after the league announced that it planned to move the All-Star Game and MLB Draft out of Atlanta in response to Georgia enacting controversial new voting restrictions last month. The game is scheduled for July 13.

Chicago 113 – INDIANA 97… Nikola Vucevic powered his way to 32 points and 17 rebounds in leading the Bulls past the short-handed Pacers. Zach LaVine added 19 points.

ATLANTA 123 – New Orleans 107… The Hawks used a barrage of 3-pointers to bomb the Pelicans in the third quarter and pull away with the win. Trae Young pumped in 30 points. Bogdan Bogdanovic tossed in 21 points.

Philadelphia 106 – BOSTON 96… The 76ers got 35 points from Joel Embiid in rolling past the Celtics for their third straight win. Danny Green added 17 points.

L.A. Lakers 110 – TORONTO 101… The Lakers jumped out to a 12-point lead after the first quarter and retained control in their win over the Raptors. Talen Horton-Tucker came off the bench to score 17 points and lead seven players in double figures.

Memphis 124 – MIAMI 112… The Grizzlies won their third in a row and handed the Heat their first loss in five games. Dillon Brooks scored a season-high 28 points. Jonas Valanciunas had 20 points and 10 boards.

DENVER 134 – Detroit 119… The Nuggets built a 20-point halftime lead and coasted past the Pistons. Nikola Jokic led the way with 27 points. Michael Porter Jr. added 25 points and Wil Barton tossed in 24.

GOLDEN STATE 122 – Milwaukee 121… The Warriors held on at the end to edge the bucks. Kelly Oubre knocked down a pair of pair of free throws with 7.7 seconds left. Stephen Curry poured in 41 points.

L.A. CLIPPERS 133 – Portland 116… The Clippers scored a franchise-record 47 first-quarter points on their way to a blowout of the Trail Blazers. Paul George scored a game-high 36 points. Kawhi Leonard had 20 points and 11 rebounds.

N.Y. ISLANDERS 1 – Washington 0… Brock Nelson broke a scoreless tie with just under seven minutes remaining and the Islanders held on to clip the Capitals. Goalie Semyon Varlamov stopped all 29 shots.

N.Y. RANGERS 8 – Pittsburgh 4… Eight different players found the net as the Rangers outshot the Penguins. Artemi Panarin had a goal and three assists.

Boston 4 – PHILADELPHIA 2… Patrice Bergeron scored three goals in leading the Bruins past the Flyers. Brad Marchand added a shorthanded goal. Jeremy Swayman made 40 saves at goal.

CAROLINA 5 – Florida 2… Jordan Staal scored two of the Hurricanes’ four unanswered goals in the third period in a comeback win over the Panthers. Vincent Trocheck had a goal and an assist. Goalie Petr Mrazek made 34 stops.

COLUMBUS 4 – Tampa Bay 2… The Blue Jackets scored the game’s first four goals in skating past the Lightning. Max Domi and Jack Roslovic each had a goal and an assist. Joonas Korpisalo made 36 saves at goal.

Nashville 3 – DETROIT 2 (SO)… Ryan Johansen and Roman Josi scored in the shootout to send the Predators past the Red Wings. Mikael Granlund scored a tying goal with 3:58 left in regulation.

CHICAGO 4 – Dallas 2… Patrick Kane scored a goal and assisted on another as the Blackhawks topped the Stars. Chicago also got goals from Kirby Dach, Dominik Kublik and Alex DeBrincat.

Anaheim 5 – SAN JOSE 1… David Backes and Nicolas Deslauriers each had a goal and an assist for the Ducks as they skated past the Sharks. Goalie John Gibson made 34 saves.
