CORONAVIRUS UPDATES… The number of confirmed coronavirus cases in the U.S. has reached 31,002,264 and the nation’s death toll stands at 560,116, according to figures released last night by Johns Hopkins University… A mass vaccination site in North Carolina temporarily shut down yesterday after several patients suffered immediate reactions to the Johnson & Johnson shot. On Wednesday, 11 people had adverse reactions at a site in Denver, Colorado.

BIDEN TAKES GUN ACTION… President Joe Biden yesterday announced a series of executive actions to reduce gun violence and called on Congress to pass broader gun-control legislation. Biden’s actions included directing the Department of Justice to address the spread of untraceable “ghost guns” and create a federal “red-flag” law that allows police or family members to petition a court to bar an individual from accessing firearms. The president also confirmed that he plans to nominate former federal agent David Chipman to head the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms.

UNEMPLOYMENT CLAIMS EXCEED EXPECTATIONS… Numbers released by the Labor Department yesterday revealed that nearly 750,000 U.S. workers have filed for new unemployment benefits. The number of new claims reflects an increase of 16,000 claims over the previous week and is about 70,000 more than what most analysts expected. New claims averaged about 200,000 per week before the pandemic.

FLORIDA SUES OVER CRUISE SHIPS… The state of Florida has filed suit against the Biden administration over the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s decision to prevent the U.S. cruise industry from immediately resuming operations amid the pandemic. The suit, filed yesterday in federal court in Tampa by Republican Florida Attorney General Ashley Moody, seeks an injunction barring enforcement of the CDC’s order and to quickly lift a “nationwide lockdown” on the industry that has been in place for more than a year. Plaintiffs say Florida’s ports have suffered a decline in operating revenue of almost $300 million since the pandemic started.

CHAUVIN TRIAL… George Floyd died from a “low level of oxygen” and his preexisting health conditions and drug use were not relevant to his death, a renowned pulmonary critical care doctor testified yesterday morning in the trial of former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin. Dr. Martin Tobin told the jury that Floyd was deprived of oxygen after Chauvin pinned him to the street with his knee on his nick and restricted his ability to breathe. Dr. Bill Smock, the police surgeon of the Louisville Police Department, offered testimony supporting Tobin’s conclusion, saying Floyd died of positional asphyxia. Chauvin faces conviction on a charge of second- or third-degree murder, or second-degree manslaughter. His trial is expected to last a couple more weeks.

… Roger Waters announced new dates for his “This Is Not a Drill” tour. The tour will launch next summer after the coronavirus pandemic forced postponement. The 36-date North American trek kicks off July 6, 2022, in Pittsburgh and continues through an October 8 show in Dallas. Waters says he’ll play songs from what he calls Pink Floyd’s “golden era,” along with “several” new tracks.

CBS CANCELS ‘McGYVER’… CBS announced yesterday that it is cancelling its “MacGyver” reboot after five seasons. The series will conclude with the April 30 episode. Lucas Till stars in the title role and the cast includes Tristin Mays, Justin Hires, Meredith Eaton, Levy Tran and Henry Ian Cusick. The original “MacGyver” starring Richard Dean Anderson aired for seven seasons from 1985 to 1992.


N.Y. METS 3 – Miami 2
… The Mets scored twice in the top of the ninth inning to upend the Marlins. Jeff McNeil homered to lead off the inning and umpires rule that Michael Conforto was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to force home the winning run.

Chi. Cubs 4 – PITTSBURGH 2… Javier Baez’ two-run homer in the top of the sixth inning gave the Cubs the lead for good in their win over the Pirates. Kris Bryant and Anthony Rizzo smacked solo homers.

COLORADO 7 – Arizona 3… Dom Nuñes blasted a three-run homer to help power the Rockies past the Diamondbacks. Trevor Story and Charlie Blackmon knocked in two runs apiece. Starting pitcher Jon Gray (1-0) held Arizona hitless through six innings.

ST. LOUIS 3 – Milwaukee 1… Nolan Arenado’s two-run homer in the bottom of the eighth inning sent the Cardinals past the Brewers on opening day in St. Louis. Tyler O’Neill’s infield single scored Yadier Molina with they tying run in the seventh.

Boston 7 – BALTIMORE 3
… The Red Sox topped the Orioles for their fourth straight win. Rafael Devers homered with a runner aboard. Kiké Hernández added a solo shot.

CHI. WHITE SOX 6 – Kansas City 0… White Sox starter Lance Lynn (1-0) tossed a five-hitter and struck out 11 in the majors’ first shutout of the season. Yoan Moncada hit a two-run homer and Yermin Mercedes followed with a solo shot in the bottom of the first inning for Chicago.

MINNESOTA 10 – Seattle 2… The Twins pounded out 16 hits in their thrashing of the Mariners. Mitch Garver blasted a go-ahead three-run homer in the bottom of the third inning. Byron Buxton homered to lead off the fifth. Luis Arraez capped the barrage with a two-run blast in the seventh.

L.A. Angels 7 – TORONTO 5 (11 innings)… David Fletcher came through with a two-run single in the top of the 11th inning to send the Angels past the Blue Jays in the first regular-season game played at Toronto’s spring training home in Dunedin, Florida. Fletcher also doubled home a run in the third. Mike Trout went 3-for-5 with a solo homer.

HOUSTON 6 – Oakland 2… Carlos Correa homered to open the scoring in the bottom of the second inning and doubled home a run in the fourth to spark the Astros past the Athletics. Yordan Alvarez and Jose Altuve also went deep for Houston. Myles Straw stroked a two-run single. Starter Cristian Javier (1-0) pitched three-hit ball over five scoreless innings.

Chicago 122 – TORONTO 113… The Bulls cruised past the Raptors for their third straight win. Nikola Vucevic and Zach LaVine scored 22 points apiece. LaVine also dished off 13 assists.

Cleveland 129 – OKLAHOMA CITY 102… The Cavaliers held the Thunder to 13 third-quarter points and the rout was on. Collin Sexton led all scorers with 27 points. Taurean Prince scored 22 points off the bench and Darius Garland dropped in 21 points.

DALLAS 116 – Milwaukee 101… The Mavericks bombed the Bucks 36-17 in the fourth quarter to run away with the victory. Luka Doncic scored a game-high 27 points. Kristaps Porzingis had 26 points and 17 rebounds.

UTAH 122 – Portland 103… The Jazz took control with a dominant third quarter and downed the Trail Blazers for their 23th straight home win. Donovan Mitchell lit it up for 37 points. Rudy Gobert grabbed 21 boards to go with his 18 points.

L.A. CLIPPERS 113 – Phoenix 103… The Clippers got 33 points from Paul George and 27 from Kawhi Leonard in downing the Suns. L.A. seized control with a 10-2 spurt to open the second half.

Detroit 113 – SACRAMENTO 101… The Pistons built an 18-point halftime lead on their way past the Kings. Cory Joseph scored a season-high 24 points. Isaiah Stewart had 16 points and 13 rebounds.

New Jersey 6 – BUFFALO 3… Jesper Boqvist scored the first of Devils’ three unanswered third-period goals in their win over the Sabres. Pavel Zacha scored New Jersey’s first two goals on power-plays 1:41 apart in the first period. Jack Hughes had a goal and two assists.

N.Y. ISLANDERS 3 – Philadelphia 2 (SO)… The Islanders recovered to outlast the Flyers after blowing an early two-goal lead. Brock Nelson opened the scoring with a first-period goal and netted the lone goal in the shootout.

Pittsburgh 5 – N.Y. RANGERS 2… Radim Zohorna, Evan Rodrigues and Kris Letang all had a goal and an assist as the Penguins skated past the Rangers to snap a two-game skid.

Boston 4 – WASHINGTON 2… Brad Marchand scored a shorthanded goal and had an assist in the Bruins’ win over the Capitals. Craig Smith also had a goal and an assist. Goalie Jeremy Swayman made 31 saves in his second NHL start.

CAROLINA 3 – Florida 0… Hurricanes Goalie Alex Nedeljkovic stopped all 24 shots for his third shutout in 12 games. Vincent Trocheck, Sebastian Aho and Martin Necas scored for Carolina.

Tampa Bay 6 – COLUMBUS 4… The Lightning scored three goals in the first six minutes and held off the Blue Jackets. Blake Coleman had a goal and two assists. Yanni Gourde set up four goals.

Winnipeg 4 – MONTREAL 2… The Jets scored three first-period goals and hung on to top the Canadiens. Kyle Connor assisted on two goals. Goalie Connor Hellebuyck made 36 stops.

Edmonton 3 – OTTAWA 1… Devin Shore tipped in a go-ahead goal with 7 minutes left and Jesse Puljujarvi added an empty-netter as the Oilers completed a nine-game sweep of the season series.

Nashville 7 – DETROIT 1… Viktor Arvidsson scored three goals in leading the Predators past the Red Wings. Nick Cousins had a goal and an assist. Ben Harpur had two assists.

Dallas 5 – CHICAGO 1… Blake Comeau found the net twice as the Stars breezed past the Blackhawks. Roope Hintz had a goal and three assists. Anton Khudobin made 38 saves at goal.

NFL NEWS… Authorities in South Carolina have confirmed that former NFL player Phillip Adams killed five people before killing himself on Wednesday. York County Sheriff Kevin Tolson said at a news conference yesterday that investigators don’t know the motive in the shooting deaths of a prominent doctor, his wife and their three grandchildren. The 33-year-old Adams played defensive back in 78 NFL games over five seasons for San Francisco, New England, Seattle, Oakland and the New York Jets before finishing his career with Atlanta in 2015.

GOLF NEWS… Justin Rose made seven birdies and an eagle on his way to an opening-round 7-under 65 to take a four-stroke lead at The Masters. Brian Harman and Hideki Matsuyama finished the round in second place. Will Zalatoris, Christiaan Bezuidenhout, Webb Simpson and Patrick Reed were in third place, five shots off the lead.
