CORONAVIRUS UPDATES… The number of confirmed coronavirus cases in the U.S. has reached 31,421,367 and the nation’s death toll stands at 564,402, according to figures released last night by Johns Hopkins University… The New York Times cited Centers for Disease Control and Prevention data yesterday in reporting a rise in drug-overdose deaths amid the pandemic. At least 87,000 drug overdose deaths were reported from October 2019 to September 2020, reflecting a 29-percent increase from the year before. The data reveals a large portion of the deaths occurred in April and May, when many treatment centers and support groups were shut down.

BIDEN PULLING TROOPS FROM AFGHANISTAN… President Joe Biden yesterday formally announced his plan to withdraw all U.S. troops from Afghanistan by September. 11. Later, NATO’s 30-member states signed on to the plan after a meeting with U.S. military and foreign relations leaders. Senior administration officials say it’s possible all 2,500 U.S. troops in Afghanistan could be removed before then.

BROOKLYN CENTER PROTESTS… Authorities in the Minneapolis suburb of Brooklyn Center arrested two dozen people last night during a fourth night of protests that have followed the police-involved shooting death of 20-year-old Daunte Wright. Kimberly Potter, a 26-year veteran of the Brooklyn Center Police Department and former union president, fatally shot Wright during a traffic stop. Potter was arrested yesterday and charged with second-degree manslaughter.

MUNCIE COPS INDICTED… Four officers from the Muncie Police Department in Indiana were indicted yesterday for allegedly using excessive force on arrestees and covering it up with false arrest reports. Officer Joseph Winkle, who is facing 11 felony charges, has been accused of kicking, punching, and tasering an arrestee without reason. Six of Winkle’s charges are for writing false reports about his use of force in the arrests. Winkle and fellow officer Jeremy Gibson are charged with depriving arrestees of their rights to be free from excessive force.

REPORT CITES POLICE FAILURES IN JAN. 6 CAPITOL ATTACK… A Capitol Police inspector general report scheduled to be discussed before the House Administration Committee today confirms that officers were specifically instructed by their leaders to go easy on pro-Trump attackers at the U.S. Capitol on January 6. Inspector General Michael A. Bolton says in the report that the agency’s Civil Disturbance Unit was forbidden from using its most powerful tools to stem the riot. Officials who were on duty during the riot told the inspector general that, if such equipment was allowed, it could have helped cops “push back the rioters.”

ENTERTAINMENT
‘MEMORY’ CAST ANNOUNCED
… Guy Pearce, Monica Bellucci, Harold Torres, Taj Atwal and Ray Fearon have signed on to the cast of the upcoming action thriller “Memory.” The film stars Liam Neeson, who plays an expert assassin who refuses to complete a job for an expert criminal organization and becomes a target. The story is based on the book De Zaak Alzheimer by Jef Geeraerts as well as the Belgian film “The Memory of Killer.”

‘WARRIOR’ EXTENDED AT HBO MAX… HBO Max has obtained the drama “Warrior” from Cinemax and plans to renew it as a Max Original for Season 3. The drama series is set during the Tong Wars of San Francisco’s Chinatown in the late 19th century, based on the writings of martial arts legend Bruce Lee. Stars include Andrew Koji, Kieran New and Celine Buckens.

Washington 6 – ST. LOUIS 0
… Joe Ross (1-0) pitched four-hit ball over six innings and three relievers completed the shutout of the Cardinals. Ryan Zimmerman provided all the offense the Nationals needed with a two-run homer in the top of the third inning.

MILWAUKEE 7 – Chi. Cubs 0… Starter Corbin Burnes (1-1) limited the Brewers to two hits and struck out 10 in a dominant six-inning effort and got help from two relievers in the blanking. Burnes helped himself at the plate with a two-run single. Travis Shaw singled home a run and homered with the bases empty.

SAN FRANCISCO 3 – Cincinnati 0… Johnny Cueto (2-0) left the mound in the sixth inning after holding the Reds to three hits and four relievers did the rest in the shutout. Austin Slater doubled home a run and scored in the bottom of the fifth inning for the Giants.

PITTSBURGH 5 – San Diego 1… Tyler Anderson (1-2) allowed just a run on four hits over 5-1/3 innings and the Pirates cruised past the Padres. Gregory Polanco homered and Adam Frazier stroked a two-run single.

N.Y. METS 5 – Philadelphia 1… Mets starter David Peterson (1-1) surrendered just a run on two hits over six innings and fanned 10 in the win over the Phillies. Jean Segura and James McCann homered for New York.

Miami 6 – ATLANTA 5 (10 innings)… The Marlins recovered to outlast the Braves after blowing an early five-run lead. Jesus Aguilar doubled home Starling Marte with the decisive run in the top of the 10th inning.

L.A. DODGERS 4 – Colorado 2… Justin Turner singled home a run and homered for the Dodgers. Rookie Zach McKinstry also went deep.

AMERICAN LEAGUE
Boston 3 – MINNESOTA 2
… The Red Sox scored all three runs in the top of the second inning and held on to edge the Twins in the doubleheader opener. Nathan Eovaldi (2-1) allowed two runs on five hits over five innings.

Boston 7 – MINNESOTA 1… The Red Sox cruised past the Twins to complete a sweep of the twinbill and run their winning streak to nine games. Alex Verdugo stroked a tie-breaking two-run single during a six-run top of the fifth inning and added a solo homer in the seventh.

TORONTO 5 – N.Y. Yankees 4… Bo Bichette smacked his second solo homer of the game in the bottom of the ninth inning to send the Blue Jays past the Yankees in Dunedin, Florida. Alejandro Kirk homered with a runner aboard.

KANSAS CITY 6 – L.A. Angels 1… Royals starter Brad Keller (1-1) held the Angels to a run on four hits over 5-2/3 innings. Salvador homered and doubled home a run. Carlos Santana drilled a two run homer.

Detroit 6 – HOUSTON 4… The Tigers scored the game’s first six runs and held on to finish off a three-game sweep of the Astros. Jeimer Candelario went 3-for-5 with a two-run single.

Texas 5 – TAMPA BAY 1… Kohei Arihari (1-1) tossed three-hit ball over 5-2/3 innings to earn his first major-league victory and the Rangers cruised past the Rays. Nate Lowe homered to lead off the second inning and David Dahl doubled home two runs for Texas.

CHI. WHITE SOX 8 – Cleveland 0… White Sox lefty Carlos Rodón (2-0) tossed the second no-hitter of the 2021 season and the 20th in franchise history. He lost his bid for a perfect game with one out in the top of the ninth when his low inside pitch nicked batter Roberto Perez in the big toe of his rear foot. Yermin Mercedes belted a three-run homer as Chicago put the game away early with a three-run first.

Seattle – BALTIMORE (ppd)… Rain in Baltimore forced postponement of last night’s Mariners-Orioles game. It will be made up as part of a doubleheader today.

L.A. Clippers 100 – DETROIT 98… Reggie Jackson knocked down a tie-breaking jumper with 2.3 seconds remaining and finished with a game-high 29 points to lift the Clippers over his former team. Ivica Zubac had 18 points and 13 rebounds.

Orlando 115 – CHICAGO 106… The Magic downed the Bulls to snap their six-game skid. James Ennis scored 22 points. Wendell Carter Jr. added 19 points and 12 boards.

New York 116 – NEW ORLEANS 106… Julius Randle pumped in 32 points to lead the Knicks past the Pelicans. Alec Burks delivered 21 points off the bench.

Indiana 132 – HOUSTON 124… The Pacers dealt the Rockets their fourth straight loss. Caris LeVert scored 27 points. Malcolm Brogdon had 23 points and 14 rebounds. Domantas Sabonis tossed in 22 points.

Golden State 147 – OKLAHOMA CITY 109… Stephen Curry scored 25 of his 42 points in the third quarter as the Warriors ran away from the Thunder. Draymond Green racked up 12 points, 10 boards and 16 assists.

Dallas 114 – MEMPHIS 113… Luka Doncic beat the buzzer with a lunging 3-pointer to give the Mavericks a come-from-behind win over the Grizzlies. Doncic led all scorers with 29 points. Kristaps Porzingis added 21 points.

DENVER 123 – Miami 106… Michael Porter Jr. scored 25 points and pulled down 10 rebounds as the Nuggets cruised past the Heat. Nikola Jokic had 17 points, 10 boards and 11 assists.

Washington 123 – SACRAMENTO 111… The Wizards took control early with a 42-point first quarter and coasted past the Kings. Bradley Beale scored led the way with 31 points. Russell Westbrook finished with 25 points, 15 rebounds and 11 assists.
