The Rundown for April 16, 2021

CORONAVIRUS UPDATES… The number of confirmed coronavirus cases in the U.S. has reached 31,495,164 and the nation’s death toll stands at 565,283, according to figures released last night by Johns Hopkins University… Pfizer CEO Albert Bourla said people will “likely” need a third dose of a Covid-19 vaccine within 12 months of getting fully vaccinated. In comments made public yesterday but taped on April 1, Bourla also said it’s possible people will need to get vaccinated against the coronavirus annually. Researchers still don’t know how long protection against the virus lasts once someone has been fully vaccinated.

RUSSIA SANCTIONED… President Joe Biden yesterday announced sanctions against nearly three dozen Russian individuals and entities for attempts to interfere in and influence the 2020 presidential election. Biden said in remarks from the White House that he informed Russian President Vladimir Putin on Tuesday that the U.S. would be “responding in a measured and proportionate way” after determining that Russia had interfered in the 2020 election and was responsible for a widespread cyberattack on U.S. agencies and corporations last year. The sanctions are being issued by the Treasury Department’s Office of Foreign Assets Control, which identify 16 people and 16 entities for meddling in the election. A Treasury Department statement claimed Russia ran campaigns to boost Donald Trump after Trump’s campaign manager, Paul Manafort, and Trump’s associate Rick Gates provided Russian intelligence officials with internal campaign polling and strategy information.

AT LEAST 8 DEAD IN INDIANAPOLIS SHOOTING… Authorities in Indianapolis say at least eight people were killed last night in a mass shooting at a FedEx facility. Multiple others were injured during the incident and taken to area hospitals. Police said the suspected shooter also died at the scene. The identification of the shooter and their motive is currently unknown.

CHAUVIN TRIAL… Both sides rested their case yesterday in the trial of former Minneapolis policeman Derek Chauvin. The defendant waived his right to testify in his own defense about his fatal encounter with George Floyd last May after his attorney has tried to raise doubts about what cause Floyd’s death. Jurors are scheduled to hear closing arguments on Monday before receiving the case for deliberations. Meanwhile, the former Brooklyn Center, Minnesota, policewoman charged with manslaughter in the fatal shooting of a 20-year-old Black man during a traffic stop on Sunday made her first court appearance yesterday. 48-year-old Kimberly Potter, who turned in her badge on Tuesday and posted $100,000 bond hours after her arrest on Wednesday, waived her right to a formal reading of the criminal complaint. Finally, disturbing bodycam video was released yesterday following the March 29 Chicago police shooting of a 13-year-old boy. The victim, Adam Toledo, had his hands in the air when officer Eric Stillman fatally shot him in the chest.

SEARCH CONTINUES FOR CAPSIZED SHIP IN GULF… Search efforts will continue today following Tuesday’s capsizing of a 129-foot commercial ship in the Gulf of Mexico. Authorities say the Seacor Power was overturned during a vicious storm with 19 people on board and have declared it a “major marine casualty” incident. Six crew members were initially rescued on the open water, and one person was found dead the next day. Coast Guard divers were able to knock on the hull of the vessel yesterday but did not hear a response.

ENTERTAINMENT
PETE DAVIDSON TO STAR AS JOEY RAMONE
… “Saturday Night Live” castmember Pete Davidson has signed on to star in an upcoming Netflix biopic about the late punk-rock legend Joey Ramone. “I Slept With Joey Ramone” is based on the book of the same name by Joey Ramone’s brother Mickey Leigh and carries the blessing of the family’s estate. Davidson previously appeared in the Netflix rock biopic “The Dirt” about Mötley Crüe.

FYRE FESTIVAL SETTLEMENT… Lawyers representing Fyre Festival organizers have reached a $2 million class-action lawsuit settlement that will award $7,220 to each of the 277 ticket-holders who attended the infamous failure of a “music festival” in 2017. Plaintiffs, who were found to have been defrauded by Fyre Festival founder Billy McFarland, probably won’t see the full amount of the settlement since multiple creditors remain involved in litigation. The 29-year-old McFarland is serving a six-year prison sentence after pleading guilty to wire fraud.
