CORONAVIRUS UPDATES… The number of confirmed coronavirus cases in the U.S. has reached 31,792,509 and the nation’s death toll stands at 568,461, according to figures released last night by Johns Hopkins University… The State Department has announced plans to update travel advisories amid the ongoing pandemic. New guidelines expected to be released later this week will urge Americans to curb visits “to approximately 80% of countries worldwide” that are experiencing dramatic spikes in cases.

CHAUVIN FOUND GUILTY ON ALL COUNTS… Former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin was found guilty of all three counts in the murder of George Floyd yesterday. The 12-person jury convicted Chauvin of second- and third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter. The jurors reached their decision after 10 hours of deliberations and three weeks of testimony. Immediately after the verdict was announced, the judge revoked Chauvin’s bail and remanded him into custody, with a custody hearing in about eight weeks. Chauvin faces up to 40 years in prison on the second-degree murder charge, up to 25 years on the third-degree murder charge and up to 10 years on the manslaughter charge.

SENATE CONFIRMS LISA MONACO AS DEPUTY AG… The U.S. Senate voted 98-2 yesterday to confirm Lisa Monaco as deputy attorney general. In filling the No. 2 position at the Justice Department, the 53-year-old Monaco will help lead investigations into the January 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol and an alleged Russian-led hacking campaign that targeted software made by SolarWinds Corp. Monaco previously served as a Homeland Security Adviser to President Barack Obama.

U.S. AMBASSADOR TO RUSSIA HEADING HOME… U.S. ambassador to Russia John Sullivan has confirmed that he’s temporarily returning to the U.S. in response to the Russian government urging him to leave the country. The Kremlin last week retaliated against U.S. sanctions for election interference and the recent SolarWinds mega-hack by expelling 10 U.S. diplomats and telling Ambassador John Sullivan to return home. Russia recalled its ambassador to Washington, Anatoly Antonov, in March after Biden expressed his belief that Vladimir Putin is “a killer.”

COLORADO GOVERNOR SIGNS GUN LAWS… Colorado Governor Jared Polis yesterday signed two bills that tighten gun laws in his state. Both measures were introduced prior to last month’s mass shooting at a grocery store in Boulder. Senate Bill 78 requires a gun owner to report their lost or stolen firearm within five days or be subject to fines. House Bill 1106 mandates gun owners to “responsibly and securely” store their firearms when not in use to prevent juveniles and other unauthorized users from accessing them. It also requires a licensed gun dealer to provide a locking device with each firearm sale or transfer.

… Songwriter and producer Jim Steinman, who was best known for his collaborations with Meatloaf, died on Monday of undisclosed causes. He was 73. Steinman contributed songs to Meatloaf’s 1977 album “Bat Out of Hell” and produced the artist’s 1993 hit, “I’d Do Anything For Love (But I Won’t Do That).” Steinman also produced Bonnie Tyler’s 1983 song “Total Eclipse of the Heart” and worked with such other artists as Def Leppard, Barbra Streisand and Air Supply.

‘LUPIN’ TOPS NETFLIX CHART… “Lupin” topped Netflix’s viewership charts for the first quarter of 2021. About 76 million member accounts worldwide watched at least a couple minutes of the series over its first four weeks of release. “Series Fate: The Winx Saga” and “Who Killed Sara?” were among other popular programs at the streaming service.

… The Giants came from six runs down in the sixth inning to top the Phillies. Buster Posey homered twice with the bases empty.

WASHINGTON 3 – St. Louis 2… The Nationals came up with two runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to upend the Cardinals. Yan Gomes drew a bases-loaded walk to force home Josh Harrison with the go-ahead run.

CHI. CUBS 3 – N.Y. Mets 1… Cubs starter Jake Arrieta (3-1) held the Mets to a run on three hits over three innings. Eric Sogard singled home a run and scored twice.

Milwaukee 6 – SAN DIEGO 0… Brewers starter Corbin Burnes tossed a four-hitter and fanned 10 over six innings. Three relievers completed the shutout. Billy McKinney and Jace Peterson smacked solo homers.

Arizona – CINCINNATI (susp.)… Rain and snow in Cincinnati forced suspension of the Diamondbacks-Reds game in the eighth inning with the Diamondbacks winning 5-4.

Chi. White Sox 8 – CLEVELAND 5
… Jose Abreu homered twice and drove in three runs for the White Sox.

OAKLAND 7 – Minnesota 0… Mitch Moreland hit a pair of homers and knocked in three runs for the Athletics in the doubleheader opener. Matt Olson unloaded a grand slam.

OAKLAND 1 – Minnesota 0… The Athletics clipped the Twins to complete a sweep of the twinbill and run their winning streak to 10 games. Jesus Luzardo (1-1) allowed just two hits over 5-1/3 innings.

BOSTON 4 – Toronto 3… Xavier Bogaerts belted a three-run homer and Bobby Dalbec added an RBI single as the Red Sox did all their scoring in the bottom of the fourth inning and held off the Blue Jays.

Tampa Bay 14 – KANSAS CITY 7… They Rays pounded out 17 hits in their thrashing of the Royals. They got homers from Brandon Lowe, Austin Meadows and Mike Zunino.

L.A. ANGELS 6 – Texas 2… Kurt Suzuki hit a two-run homer for the Angels. Mike Trout and Albert Pujols added solo shots.

L.A. Dodgers 1 – SEATTLE 0
… Julio Urias (3-0) pitched one-hit ball over seen innings and struck out 11. Two relievers completed the shutout. Corey Seager singled home A.J. Pollock with the game’s only run in the top of the third inning.

N.Y. YANKEES 3 – Atlanta 1… The Yankees scored twice in the bottom of the eighth inning on a wild pitch and a walk to ease past the Braves and snap their five-game skid.

Baltimore 7 – MIAMI 5… Trey Mancini and Freddy Galvis hit solo homers for the Orioles. Rio Ruiz stroked a two-run double.

COLORADO 6 – Houston 2… C.J. Cron belted a three-run homer and knocked in five runs to lead the Rockies’ past the Astros. Dom Nuñez also went deep.

Pittsburgh – DETROIT (ppd)… Rain in Detroit forced postponement of last night’s Pirates-Tigers game. It has been re-scheduled as part of a doubleheader today.

PITTSBURGH 7 – New Jersey 6… The Penguins took a 6-0 lead into the third period and needed an additional goal from Sidney Crosby to get past the Devils.

DALLAS 5 – Detroit 2… Rookie Jason Robertson had a goal and an assist as the Stars won their fourth in a row. Jason Dickinson set up two goals.

VANCOUVER 6 – Toronto 3… Tanner Pearson and Brandon Sutter scored two goals apiece as the Canucks doubled up on the Maple Leafs.

LOS ANGELES 4 – Anaheim 1… Blake Lizotte and Andreas Athanasiou each had a goal and an assist for the Kings.
