CORONAVIRUS UPDATES… The number of confirmed coronavirus cases in the U.S. has reached 32,124,369 and the nation’s death toll stands at 572,666, according to figures released last night by Johns Hopkins University… The Pacific Northwest is emerging as the most recent hotspot, prompting state and local officials in Washington and Oregon to warn of dangers to younger people and new lockdown restrictions. Health officials say the spike is being driven by a “sharp increase” in the number of young adults in their 30s and 40s testing positive.

JUSTICE DEPARTMENT TO PROBE LOUISVILLE METRO PD… An investigation launched by Attorney General Merrick Garland will assess whether the Louisville Metro Police Department engages in a pattern or practice of using unreasonable force. Investigators will also try to determine “whether LMPD engaged in unconstitutional stops and seizures” as well as illegally used search warrants on private homes. Garland last week announced the Justice Department would conduct a similar investigation into the Minneapolis Police Department.

CENSUS RESULTS… Results from Census Bureau published yesterday confirm that the South and West continue population growths. Census results are used to reallocate the 435 House districts among states population growth has spurred House seat gains in Texas, Florida, Colorado, Montana, Oregon and North Carolina. Seats were lost in California, New York, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Ohio, Michigan and Illinois. Overall, the U.S. population grew to 331 million in the new census but the a 7.4-percent growth rate from the 2010 census was the second slowest rate of population growth ever recorded, just behind the 7.3-percent growth during the Great Depression.

TIM RYAN TO RUN FOR OHIO SENATE SEAT… Ohio Congressman Tim Ryan is the first Democrat to enter the race for the U.S. Senate seat that’s being vacated by retiring Republican Senator Rob Portman. Portman, who has served the passed two terms, cited “partisan gridlock” in his January announcement the he wouldn’t seek re-election. Ryan launched his campaign yesterday with an appeal to Ohio workers.

RECALL TARGETS CALIFORNIA GOVERNOR… Opponents of California Governor Gavin Newsom have gathered enough validated signatures to force a recall election this year. Election officials say voters would head to the polls sometime between this summer and December. The recall effort targeted restrictions Newsom put in place to curb the spread of coronavirus and the alarming surge in cases last winter.

DHS TO PROBE INTERNAL DOMESTIC VIOLENCE EXTREMISM… Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas has launched an internal investigation into the threat of domestic violent extremism within the DHS. In a letter he sent to employees at the department, Mayorkas said a working group will provide a “comprehensive review of how to best prevent, detect, and respond to threats related to domestic violent extremism within DHS.” The DHS is comprised of multiple agencies employing more than 240,000 people.

ENTERTAINMENT
OSCAR RATINGS PLUMMET
… A preliminary estimate from The Nielsen Company indicates Sunday’s night’s Academy Awards television audience drew a record-low 9.85 million viewers. That number is less than half of last year’s 23.6 million viewership, which set the previous record for least-watched Oscars telecast. Analysts believe that with movie theaters closed during the pandemic, people lacked enthusiasm for movies they may not have been familiar with.

NETFLIX SETS ‘MASTER OF NONE’ PREMIERE… Netflix announced yesterday that Season 3 of the series “Master of None” will premiere on May 23. The series centers on a struggling actor pursing a career and romance in New York. The third season will focus on Denise and her partner, Alicia. Aziz Ansari stars alongside Lena Waithe and Naomi Ackie. Ansari and series-co-creator Alan Yang, shared a writing Emmy for 2015’s first season. Ansari and Waithe won the outstanding comedy writing Emmy for the second season in 2017.

NATIONAL LEAGUE
ATLANTA 8 – Chi. Cubs 7… The Braves slugged their way past the Cubs after blowing an early 4-0 lead. Freddy Freeman belted a tie-breaking three-run homer in the bottom of the fifth inning.

Miami 8 – MILWAUKEE 0… Starter Trevor Rogers (3-1) scattered six hits over six innings and two relievers completed the blanking of the Brewers. Corey Dickerson knocked in three runs with a homer, single and double.

Philadelphia 2 – ST. LOUIS 1… Zack Wheeler (2-2) took a one-hit shutout into the ninth inning and the Phillies held on to edge the Cardinals. Rhys Hoskins homered twice for Philadelphia.

SAN FRANCISCO 12 – Colorado 0… The Giants scored nine runs in the first two innings and coasted past the Rockies. Anthony DeSclafani (2-0) tossed a three-hit shutout. Buster Posey went 4-or-5 with a two-run homer and three RBIs. Evan Longoria also drove in three runs.

Cincinnati 5 – L.A. DODGERS 3 (10 innings)… Jesse Winker’s two-run homer in the top of the 10th inning gave the Reds their first win in eight games. Nick Castellanos had a couple of hits, including an RBI single.

AMERICAN LEAGUE
Kansas City 3 – DETROIT 2
… Whit Merrifield lifted a tie-breaking sacrifice fly in the top of the fifth inning and the Royals hung on to top the Tigers. Carlos Santana opened the scoring with a two-run homer in the third.

CLEVELAND 5 – Minnesota 3 (10 innings)… Jordan Luplow’s two-run homer in the bottom of the 10th inning lifted the Indians over the Twins. Jose Ramirez tied the game with an eighth-inning solo homer.

BALTIMORE 4 – N.Y. Yankees 2… Cedric Mullins went 3-for-4 with a pair of solo homers and a double to push the Orioles past the Yankees. Starter Matt Harvey (2-1) allowed just a run on three hits over six innings.

Oakland 2 – TAMPA BAY 1… Sean Murphy’s two-run homer in the top of the fourth inning provided all the offense the Athletics needed in their win over the Rays. Sean Manaea (3-1) surrendered a run on four hits over the first four innings.

L.A. Angels 9 – TEXAS 4… Shohei Ohtani (1-0) overcame a rough start to deliver five innings on the mound and delivered a two-run double at the plate in leading the Angels past the Rangers. Justin Upton and Albert Pujols hit back-to-back homers to lead off the third. Jose Iglesias also went deep.

HOUSTON 5 – Seattle 2… Jose Altuve had three hits, including a two-run single, for the Astros. Starter Jose Urquidy (2-2) gave up two runs on five hits over six innings.

PHILADELPHIA 121 – Oklahoma City 90… Six players scored in double figures as the 76ers dealt the Thunder their 14th straight loss. Joel Embiid scored 21 points in just 23 minutes.

San Antonio 146 – WASHINGTON 143 (OT)… DeMar DeRozan scored 37 points and dished off 10 assists as the Spurs ended the Wizards’ eight-game winning streak.
Dejounte Murray finished with 25 points and 17 rebounds.

Phoenix 118 – NEW YORK 110… Devin Booker led all scorers with 33 points and the Suns handed the Knicks their first loss after nine straight wins. Mikal Bridges added 21 points and Chris Paul tossed in 20.

TORONTO 112 – Cleveland 96… The Raptors pulled away in the second half to get past the short-handed Cavaliers. Pascal Siakam led the way with 25 points.

Chicago 110 – MIAMI 102… The Bulls were too much in the fourth quarter and rallied past the Heat. They got 24 points from Nikola Vucevic and 23 from Daniel Thies.

MINNESOTA 105 – Utah 104… De’Angelo Russell made a layup with 4.2 seconds remaining provided the winning margin in the Timberwolves’ win over the Jazz. Russel made seven 3-pointers on his way to 27 points. Karl-Anthony Towns had 21 points and 11 boards.

NEW ORLEANS 120 – L.A. Clippers 103… The Pelicans jumped out to a 13-point lead after the first quarter and never looked back in their thrashing of the Clippers. All five starters scored in double figures, led by Zion Williamson’s 23 points.

DENVER 120 – Memphis 96… The short-handed Nuggets ran past the Grizzlies. Michael Porter Jr. lit it up for 31 points. Nikola Jokic powered his way to 24 points and 15 rebounds.

SACRAMENTO 113 – Dallas 106… The Kings built a big lead early and fought off the Mavericks despite playing without leading scorer De’Aaron Fox. Richaun Holmes scored 24 points for Sacramento.

ST. LOUIS 4 – Colorado 1… David Perron scored a goal and had two assists in leading the Blues past the Avalanche. Jordan Binnington stopped 31 shots at goal.

DALLAS 4 – Carolina 3 (OT)… Jamie Benn assisted on all three Stars goals in regulation and netted the game-winner at 2:44 of overtime.

NASHVILLE 4 – Florida 1… Erik Haula had a goal and an assist as the Predators skated past the Panthers. Goalie Juuse Saros made 39 saves.

Edmonton 6 – WINNIPEG 1… Connor McDavid scored three goals in notching his third hat trick of the season and ninth of his career.

LOS ANGELES 4 – Anaheim 1… The Kings continued their push for a playoff spot by sending the Ducks down to their fifth straight loss. Sean Walker and Mike Anderson scored first-period goals.

SAN JOSE 6 – Arizona 4… The Sharks scored the game’s first four goals and turned away the Coyotes. Evander Kane set up three goals and scored an empty-netter.
