CORONAVIRUS UPDATES… The number of confirmed coronavirus cases in the U.S. has reached 32,176,051 and the nation’s death toll stands at 573,381, according to figures released last night by Johns Hopkins University… Updated guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention urges that fully vaccinated Americans don’t need to wear masks outdoors if they’re walking, running or biking, or if they attend small outdoor gatherings with friends. Federal health officials also said vaccinated adults should continue wearing masks and staying 6 feet apart in large public spaces, such as sports events, indoor shopping malls and movie theaters.

FORMER NY AG LOSES LAW LICENSE… Former New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman had his law licensed suspended for a year yesterday. A state appeals court said that Schneiderman stipulated to slapping and choking three of his lovers, but it also noted his apologies and the counseling he has received. The court noted that Schneiderman has taken steps to address his alcohol abuse and past abusive behavior via his participation in AA and therapy. Schneiderman resigned as New York Attorney General in May 2018 amid allegations he physically, verbally and emotionally abused his sexual partners.

BIDEN NOMINATES ICE DIRECTOR… President Joe Biden has nominated Harris County, Texas, Sheriff Ed Gonzalez to be director of Immigration and Customs Enforcement. Gonzalez, a former Houston police officer, was elected sheriff 2016. He publicly criticized former president Trump’s policies of targeting immigrants who did not pose public safety threats. Gonzalez withdraw his bureau from a federal agreement that deputized sheriff’s departments to enforce immigrations laws on behalf of Customs and Border Protection.

REAL ID DEADLINE EXTENDED… The Department of Homeland Security announced yesterday that it is extending the REAL ID full enforcement date by 19 months to May 3, 2023. The previous deadline was October 1, 2021. Once enforcement takes effect, travelers age 18 and older flying commercially in the U.S. will need to have a REAL ID-compliant driver’s license or other state photo identity card.

NAVY WARSHIP FIRES WARNING SHOTS… A Navy warship yesterday fired warning shots at three small Iranian speedboats in international waters yesterday after the boats approached within 70 yards. The USS Firebolt and a Coast Guard cutter were operating in the northern Persian Gulf. Three Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Navy speedboats approached within “an unnecessarily close range, with unknown intent,” the Navy said.

ENTERTAINMENT
BURNING MAN CANCELLED
… Organizers of the annual Burning Man arts festival in Nevada announced the cancellation of this year’s event yesterday due to the coronavirus pandemic. The nine-day countercultural event remains on schedule for 2022. The festival was scheduled to be held this year from August 29 to September 6.

BRITNEY SPEARS TO APPEAR IN COURT… Britney Spears is scheduled to appear June 23 before a Los Angeles court to address the conservatorship that controls her career and finances. A lawyer for the 38-year-old pop star said a Los Angeles Circuit Court judge approve Spears’ request for a hearing to “address the court directly.” Spears hasn’t spoken in court since 2019 and her previous testimony has not been made public.

ATLANTA 5 – Chi. Cubs 0
… Ian Anderson (2-0) allowed one hit over seven innings. Ronald Acuña homered in the bottom of the fifth inning to break a scoreless tie.

MILWAUKEE 5 – Miami 4… Tyrone Taylor and Omar Narvaez hit back-to-back homers in the bottom of the second inning for the Brewers. Taylor added an RBI single in the sixth.

ST. LOUIS 5 – Philadelphia 2… Carlos Martinez (1-0) notched his first win as a starter since 2018 with a strong seven-plus-inning performance. Tommy Edman and Paul Goldschmidt stroked two-run doubles for St. Louis.

ARIZONA 5 – San Diego 1… Diamondbacks starter Merrill Kelly (2-2) allowed just a run on four hits over six innings. Carson Kelly homered with a runner aboard.

Colorado 7 – SAN FRANCISCO 5 (10 innings)… Ryan McMahon hit a two-run homer and C.J. Cron followed with a solo shot in the top of the ninth inning as the Rockies put away the Giants. Charlie Blackmon lined a two-run double in the first.

Cincinnati 6 – L.A. DODGERS 5… Joey Votto came through with a go-ahead two-run double in the top of the seventh inning to rally the Reds past the Dodgers. Jesse Winker homered to lead off the game.

AMERICAN LEAGUE
CLEVELAND 7 – Minnesota 4
… Franmil Reyes went 3-for-4 with a pair of solo homers in leading the Indians past the Twins. Jose Ramirez also homered with the bases empty.

N.Y. Yankees 5 – BALTIMORE 1… Corey Kluber (1-2) held the Orioles to a run on six hits over 6-2/3 innings. Aaron Judge, Kyle Hagashioka and Giancarlo Stanton homered for New York.

TAMPA BAY 4 – Oakland 3… Brett Phillips slugged a two-run homer in the bottom of the sixth inning and Joey Wendle singled home the decisive run in the seventh for the Rays.

TEXAS 6 – L.A. Angels 1… Nick Solak hit a pair of solo homers and Joey Gallo connected for a two-run shot in the Rangers’ win. Mike Foltynewicz (1-3) gave up a run on eight hits over 5-1/3 innings.

Detroit 5 – CHI. WHITE SOX 2… The Tigers overcame a season-high five errors in downing the White Sox. Miguel Cabrera and Niko Goodrum homered. Jose Ureña (1-3) pitched seven innings to notch his first win in two years.

HOUSTON 2 – Seattle 0… Cristian Javier (3-0) pitched two-hit ball over seven innings and two relievers completed the Astros’ shutout of the Mariners. Yordan Alvarez lifted a sacrifice fly and Kyle Tucker’s infield single brought in another run as Houston scored both runs in the bottom of the fourth inning.

INTERLEAGUE
PITTSBURGH 2 – Kansas City 1
… Pinch-hitter Wilmer Difo singled home Jacob Stallings with a tie-breaking run in the bottom of the seventh inning and the Pirates hung on to edge the Royals.

TORONTO 9 – Washington 5… Vladimir Guerrero Jr. belted three home runs, including a grand slam, in helping power the Blue Jays past the Nationals. Guerrero drove in seven runs on the night.

Boston 2 – N.Y. METS 1… Garrett Richards (1-2) surrendered a run on seven hits and struck out 10 as the Red Sox clipped the Mets. Rafael Devers singled home Kiké Hernandez with a go-ahead run in the top of the sixth inning. Bobby Dalbec homered to lead off the second.

Minnesota 114 – HOUSTON 107… The Timberwolves made it three straight wins with their defeat of the Rockets. Karl-Anthony Towns led all scorers with 31 points. Juancho Hernangomez delivered 22 points off the bench.

Dallas 133 – GOLDEN STATE 103… The Mavericks jumped out to a 35-12 lead after the first quarter and never looked back in their blowout of the Warriors. Luka Doncic scored a game-high 39 points.

COLUMBUS 1 – Detroit 0 (SO)… Patrik Laine and Oliver Bjorkstrand scored in the tie-breaker to send the Blue Jackets past the Red Wings. Elvis Merzlikins made 41 saves at goal. The victory ended Columbus’ nine-game losing streak.

Tampa Bay 7 – CHICAGO 4… The Lightning skated past the Blackhawks to clinch a playoff spot. Alex Killorn netted a power-play goal and added an empty-netter. Brayden Point had a goal and two assists.

Florida 7 – NASHVILLE 4… The Panthers scored four unanswered goals in the third period to put away the Predators. Jonathan Huberdeau scored two goals and set up three others.

Carolina 5 – DALLAS 1… Jordan Staal scored two power-play goals and had an assist in leading the Hurricanes past the Stars. Sebastian Aho had a goal and two assists.
