Mr. LAUGHS LATE EDITION
Today is Friday, April 30…
the 120th day of the year… 245 days left

CORONAVIRUS UPDATES… The number of confirmed coronavirus cases in the U.S. has reached 32,288,904 and the nation’s death toll stands at 575,193, according to figures released last night by Johns Hopkins University… Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer yesterday unveiled a reopening plan that loosens restrictions according to COVID-19 vaccination rate milestones. Whitmer said nearly half of residents ages 16 and up have gotten their first shots and about 36 percent are fully vaccinated. The goal is to reach 70 percent of the population fully vaccinated, according to the governor. The vaccination plan comes as Michigan is starting to turn the corner on a surge in cases and hospitalizations, particularly among young adults.

BIDEN SPEAKS AT RALLY… President Joe Biden spoke to a crowd gathered at a drive-in rally in Duluth, Georgia, yesterday to promote his infrastructure plan and mark his 100th day in office. Biden declared that America is “on the move again” as he pressed many of the points he made during his first joint address before Congress on Wednesday night. The president promoted his American Jobs Plan as a “once-in-a-generation investment in America itself” and noted that his American Families Plan will provide free preschool for 3-year-olds and 4-year-olds and two years of free community college for all Americans.

SENATE PASSES WATER INFRASTRUCTURE BILL… The Senate voted overwhelmingly yesterday to approve a $35 billion bill to upgrade the nation’s water infrastructure. The legislation is heading to the House following the 89-to-2 vote. The bill would improve the nation’s aging water and wastewater infrastructure, support programs to provide safe drinking water and set aside grant funding for poor, rural and tribal communities that have struggled with poor water quality.

FLORIDA PASSES VOTING-RESTRICTION LAW… The Florida legislature passed an omnibus election bill yesterday that imposes new restrictions on vote-by-mail and drop boxes. Both the state House and the state Senate passed the bills into law Thursday after weeks of negotiations between Republicans in both bodies. No Democrat voted in favor. Republican Governor Ron DeSantis has indicated he will sign SB 90 into law.

GIULIANI INVESTIGATION… The New York Times reported yesterday that the Justice Department’s investigation of former president Trump’s personal attorney Rudy Giuliani centers on his efforts to remove former U.S. ambassador to Ukraine Marie Yovanovitch. The investigation took a dramatic turn Wednesday morning when federal agents raided Giuliani’s Manhattan apartment and office. Investigators want to determine whether Giuliani broke lobbying laws and whether he pursued Yovanovitch’s removal at the behest of Ukrainian officials or Trump’s.

ENTERTAINMENT
ARRESTS IN LADY GAGA DOGNAPPINGS
… Police in Los Angeles have announced the arrest of five suspects in connection with the violent theft of Lady Gaga’s two dogs in February. The singer’s dog walker was shot and critically injured during the theft. Among those arrested is the 50-year-old woman who returned the French bulldogs into police, claiming she had found them tied to a pole. According to an LAPD press release, “Detectives do not believe the suspects were targeting the victim because of the dogs’ owner.” Instead, “evidence suggests the suspects knew the great value of the breed of dogs and was the motivation for the robbery.”

JOSH DUGGAR IN CUSTODY… Reality TV star Josh Duggar was arrested by U.S. Marshals in Washington County, Arkansas, yesterday and placed on a federal “hold” for undisclosed reasons. Duggar, who was the eldest of Jim Bob and Michelle Duggar’s 19 children in the series, “19 Kids and Counting,“as well as its spinoff “Counting On,” brought the franchise to a close in 2015 after seven seasons when it was revealed he had molested multiple under-age girls, including four of his sisters. In late 2019, federal investigators raided a car dealership that is allegedly owned by Duggar but it is not known if Duggar’s arrest is related to the raid.
