CORONAVIRUS UPDATES… The number of confirmed coronavirus cases in the U.S. has reached 32,421,534 and the nation’s death toll stands at 577,045, according to figures released last night by Johns Hopkins University… Colorado Governor Jared Polis yesterday extended the state’s indoor mask mandate while relaxing restrictions for those who have been fully vaccinated. According to a press release from the governor’s office, the mask mandate applies to those in groups of 10 or more in all public indoor spaces in counties with more than 35 infections per 100,000 people. However, those in groups of 10 or more people are allowed to remove their masks indoors if 80 percent of them have proof of being fully vaccinated. Masks will still be required in schools, child care centers, indoor children’s camps, government facilities, prisons and emergency medical and other healthcare settings.

HUMAN SMUGGLING SUSPECTED IN CAPSIZED BOAT… The small boat that capsized in shallow water off San Diego yesterday morning may have been part of a human smuggling operation, Border Patrol investigators believe. Three people were killed after the boat crashed into the shoreline and then broke apart on the rocks. First responders pulled 27 people out of the water with “varying degrees of injuries,” a San Diego Fire Department spokesperson said.

VICE PRESIDENT HARRIS TO LEAD SPACE COUNCIL… The Biden administration confirmed over the weekend that Vice President Kamala Harris will lead the National Space Council. She will help the council shape important national space policies and national security strategies related to space for the White House. Administration officials say Harris will focus on several areas, including sustainable development of commercial space activity, peaceful borders and responsible behaviors in space, as well as climate change and enhancing cybersecurity in space systems. She will also focus on STEM education and diversity in the workforce.

TEXAS RUNOFF.. A pair of Republicans have advanced to a runoff election that fills a vacancy in the U.S. House of Representatives left by the February death of Ron Wright, who became the first sitting member of Congress to die of COVID-19. The late congressman’s wife, Susan Wright, was the top vote-getter among a crowded field of 23 candidates who were on the ballot in Saturday’s election. Wright will face Jake Ellzey, who finished finished second.

TUPELO TORNADO… A large and destructive tornado touched down last night in Tupelo, Mississippi. Emergency crews were assessing damage into early this morning. The National Weather Service in Memphis posted a series of tweets warning people to take shelter as the damaging tornado tore through the city. Earlier yesterday, another damaging tornado touched down in Yazoo City, about 170 miles southwest of Tupelo, as part of a round of storms sweeping across the Southeast.

‘DEMON SLAYER’ SLAYS AT BOX OFFICE
… “Demon Slayer: Mugen Train” took in $6.4 million to become the first anime to top the weekend box office since “Pokémon: The First Movie” in 1998. “Moral Kombat” slipped to second place with $6.2 million. “Godzilla vs. Kong,” “Separation” and “Raya and the Last Dragon” completed the top five.

MONEYBAGG YO TOPS ALBUM CHART… Moneybagg Yo’s “A Gangsta’s Pain” sold 110,000 copies to debut atop the Billboard 200 album chart. “The Slime Language 2” compilation from Young Thug and Young Stoner Life Records dropped to No. 2 with 62,000 units sold. Morgan Wallen’s ”Dangerous: The Double Album” remained in third place after selling 54,000 copies. Eric Church’s “Soul” opened in fourth place on sales of 53,000 units. Justin Bieber’s “Justice” finished fifth with 47,000 copies sold.

NATIONAL LEAGUE
WASHINGTON 3 – Miami 1
… Max Scherzer (2-2) gave up just a run on five hits and struck out nine in a complete-game victory over the Marlins. He lost the shutout when Isan Diaz homered to lead off the top of the ninth. Ryan Zimmerman’s three-run homer in the third provided all the offense the Nationals needed.

St. Louis 3 – PITTSBURGH 0… Carlos Martinez (2-4) held the Pirates to five hits over eight innings and reliever Alex Reyes completed the shutout and notched his seventh save. Harrison Bader slugged a three-run homer in the top of the second inning.

CINCINNATI 13 – Chi. Cubs 12 (10 innings)… Nick Castellanos’ single in the bottom of the 10th inning scored with the winning run after the Reds blew a four-run eighth-inning lead. Castellanos also hit a two-run homer in the third, when Cincinnati also got got back-to-back homers from Mike Moustakas and Eugenio Suarez. Tucker Barnhart went deep, as well.

L.A. Dodgers 16 – MILWAUKEE 4… A.J. Pollock and Matt Beaty unloaded grand slams to highlight the Dodgers’ throttling of the Brewers. Pollock aded a three-run homer and finished with eight RBIs. Beaty knocked in seven runs.

ARIZONA 8 – Colorado 4… Stephen Vogt legged out a tie-breaking two-run triple in the bottom of the eighth inning and the Diamondbacks got back-to-back RBI doubles from Josh Rojas and Daulton Varsho in doubling up on the Rockies. Pavin Smith hit a two-run homer.

San Francisco 7 – SAN DIEGO 1… The Giants cruised past the Padres to salvage the series finale. Mike Tauchman hit a three-run homer and drew a bases-loaded walk. Tommy La Stella drove in a pair of runs with a single and a triple.

N.Y. Mets 8 – PHILADELPHIA 7… The Mets escaped with a win over the Phillies, thanks in part to a replay reversal in the top of the ninth inning that gave Rhys Hoskins a two-run double rather than a three-run homer. Pete Alonso’s bases-clearing double capped a six-run eighth for New York. Jonathan Villar sparked the rally with a leadoff homer.

AMERICAN LEAGUE
N.Y. YANKEES 2 – Detroit 0
… Yankees starter Corey Kluber (2-2) allowed just two hits and struck out 10 over eight innings in notching his 100th career victory. Kyle Hagashioka doubled home a run and Brett Gardner lifted a sacrifice fly as New York scored both runs in the bottom of the second inning.

TAMPA BAY 5 – Houston 4… Austin Meadows belted a three-run homer in the bottom of the fifth inning and scored a tie-breaking run on Manuel Margot’s pinch-hit single in the seventh to lead the Rays past the Astros.

Cleveland 5 – CHI. WHITE SOX 0… Zach Plesac (2-3) pitched three-hit ball over 5-2/3 innings and got help from three relievers in the blanking of the White Sox. Jose Ramirez homered with a runner aboard and Cesar Hernandez smacked a solo shot for the Indians. Amed Rosario went 3-for-4 with an RBI.

MINNESOTA 13 – Kansas City 4… Andrelton Simmons’ two-run homer sparked a seven-run bottom of the third inning and the Twins rolled past the Royals. Mitch Garver capped the big inning with a three-run homer. Alex Kirilloff completed the scoring with a three-run blast in the eighth.

TEXAS 5 – Boston 3… The Rangers erased a 3-1 deficit in their final two at-bats to down the Red Sox. David Dahl and Brock Holt produced RBI singles during a three-run bottom of the eighth inning. Isiah Kiner-Falefa homered to lead off the seventh.

OAKLAND 7 – Baltimore 5… A’s centerfielder Rámon Laureano made a leaping catch against the wall in the top of the eighth inning to preserve a tie and hit a go-ahead two-run homer in the bottom half of the inning. Matt Olson also homered with a runner aboard for Oakland.

SEATTLE 2 – L.A. Angels 0… Mariners starter Justus Sheffield (2-2) allowed just two hits over six innings and four relievers did the rest in shutting out the Angels. Dylan Moore singled home a run in the bottom of the fourth inning and Mitch Hanigar lifted a sacrifice fly in the fifth to account for Seattle’s runs.

INTERLEAGUE
TORONTO 7 – Atlanta 2
… Marcus Semien slugged a tie-breaking two-run double in the bottom of the third inning and added a two-run homer in the eighth as the Blue Jays completed a three-game sweep of the Braves.

Miami 121 – CHARLOTTE 111… The Heat took a 20-point lead into the fourth quarter and coasted past the Hornets. Bam Adebayo led a balanced scoring attack with 20 points and had 10 assists.

Sacramento 111 – DALLAS 99… The Kings got 27 points from Buddy Hield and 23 from Marvin Bagley III in downing the Mavericks. Sacramento swept the season series between the teams.

New York 122 – HOUSTON 97… Julius Randle scored 31 points before sitting out the fourth quarter of the Knicks’ blowout of the Rockets. Derrick Rose added 24 points and RJ Barrett tossed in 21.

Phoenix 123 – OKLAHOMA CITY 120… The Suns withstood a fourth-quarter rally to top the Thunder. Devin Booker led all scorers with 32 points. Chris Paul had 18 points and 12 assists.

Philadelphia 113 – SAN ANTONIO 111 (OT)… Ben Simmons’ tip-in at the buzzer sent the 76ers past the Spurs. Joel Embiid powered his way to 34 points and 12 boards. Seth Curry scored 22 points.

Toronto 121 – L.A. LAKERS 114… The Raptors bombed the Lakers 40-21 in the second quarter on their way past the Lakers. Pascal Siakam scored a game-high 39 points. Kyle Lowry had 37 points and 11 assists.
