CORONAVIRUS UPDATES… The number of confirmed coronavirus cases in the U.S. has reached 32,471,116 and the nation’s death toll stands at 577,500, according to figures released last night by Johns Hopkins University… Florida and New York are rolling back pandemic restrictions. Florida Governor Ron DeSantis yesterday signed an executive order dropping all local emergency COVID-19 pandemic restrictions across the state. New York Governor Andrew Cuomo announced that most capacity restrictions, including those on bars and restaurants, would be lifted on May 19…. The Food and Drug Administration is expected to authorize Pfizer/BioNTech’s coronavirus vaccine in children and teens ages 12 to 15 by early next week. Pfizer said at the end of March that a clinical trial involving 2,260 12-to-15-year-olds showed its efficacy is 100 percent and it is well tolerated. The vaccine is currently authorized in the U.S. for emergency use in people 16 and older.

WHITE HOUSE RAISES REFUGEE CAP… The White House yesterday raised the number of refugees who can be admitted into the U.S. from 15,000 to 62,500. The administration noted that 22,000 would be allocated to refugees coming from Africa, 13,000 to those from the Middle East and South Asia, 6,000 to those from East Asia, 4,000 to those from Europe and Central Asia, 5,000 to those from Latin America and the Caribbean and the remaining 12,500 would remain unallocated. President Joe Biden has acknowledged that the U.S. would not hit the cap this year and said the country must first rebuild the infrastructure needed to take in and support the refugees.

93 COPS KILLED ON DUTYIN 2020… Ninety-three law enforcement officers were killed last year in the line of duty, the FBI said in its annual report released yesterday. The total was only four more than was recorded in 2019. 46 of the fallen officers died as a result of felonious acts, while 47 died in accidents.

STORMS BATTER GEORGIA… Severe storms and tornados battered Georgia yesterday, leaving at least two people dead. Both of the victims were struck by fallen trees.. The National Weather Service confirmed an EF-1 tornado with 90 mph winds, with a path 250 yards wide and 1.5 miles long, struck Douglas County, flooding streets and downing power lines. The tornado may also have touched down in Fulton County where damage was reported.

BILL AND MELINDA GATES DIVORCING… Bill and Melinda Gates are ending their marriage after 27 years. In her petition for divorce filed yesterday in King County, Washington, Melinda Gates asked a judge to dissolve the marriage based on the couple’s separation contract. After meeting at Microsoft and marrying, the couple founded a philanthropic organization in 2000. Since then, the foundation has spent $53.8 billion on a wide range of initiatives related to global health, poverty alleviation and more, according to its website.

… A judge in New York has ruled that a man who is suing Kevin Spacey for $40 million in federal court cannot proceed anonymously because he shared his sexual abuse allegations with other people over the years. The plaintiff, who is identified only as C.D. in court papers, accused Spacey of preying on him in the 1980s when he was just 14 years old. His accusations were published by New York magazine and other media outlets.

NEW ‘LAW & ORDER’ ORDERED… NBC announced yesterday that it has ordered the next installment in the “Law & Order” franchise. “Law & Order: For the Defense will take an unbiased look inside a criminal defense firm, putting lawyers and the criminal justice system under the microscope. No casting has been announced yet. The original “Law & Order” debuted in 1990 and ran through 2010.

… The Phillies did all their scoring in their first two at-bats and held off the Brewers. JT Realmuto hit a two-run homer. Starter Vince Velasquez (1-0) pitched six sharp innings.

ST. LOUIS 6 – N.Y. Mets 5…… Nolan Arenado belted a game-tying three-run homer in the bottom of the third inning and Tyler O’Neill added a go-ahead RBI double as the Cardinals topped the Mets for their fifth straight win. Harrison Bader also went deep for St. Louis

SAN DIEGO 2 – Pittsburgh 0… Tommy Pham lifted a sacrifice fly and Nola doubled home a run as the Padres scored twice in the bottom of the seventh inning to slip the Pirates. Six San Diego pitchers combined on a four-hitter.

L.A. Dodgers – CHI. CUBS (ppd.)… Rain in Chicago forced postponement of last night’s Cubs-Dodgers game. It will be made up as part of a doubleheader today.

San Francisco – COLORADO (ppd.)… Rain in Denver forced postponement of last night’s Giants-Rockies game. It will be made up as part of a doubleheader today.

MINNESOTA 6 – Texas 5
… Jorge Polanco knocked in a pair of runs with a double and a triple and the Twins held off the Rangers. Starter Kenta Maeda (2-2) pitched two-hit ball over 5-1/3 scoreless innings.

Cleveland 8 – KANSAS CITY 6… Eddie Rosario blasted a tie-breaking three-run homer and Josh Naylor added a two-run shot during a five-run top of the seventh inning that carried the Indians past the Royals. Naylor also doubled home a run.

Tampa Bay 7 – L.A. ANGELS 3… Manuel Margot singled home a run and homered with a runner aboard to lead the Rays past the Angels. Mike Brosseau opened the scoring with a two-run single in the top of the third inning.

OAKLAND 5 – Toronto 4… Stephen Piscotty and Rámon Laureano hit two-run homers to power the Athletics past the Blue Jays. Jed Lowrie went 3-for-4 with an RBI double.

Baltimore 5 – SEATTLE 3… Cedric Mullins and Freddy Galvis cracked two-runs homers as the Orioles scored all five runs in the top of the eighth inning to upend the Mariners.

ATLANTA 123 – Portland 114… Danilo Gallinari made seven 3-pointers on his way to 28 points and the Hawks fought off the Trail Blazers. Bogdan Bogdanovic added 25 points. Trae Young scored 21 points and dished off 11 assists.

Philadelphia 106 – CHICAGO 94… The 76ers made it five straight wins with their defeat of the Bulls. They got 21 points from Tobias Harris and 20 from Seth Curry.

New York 118 – MEMPHIS 104… Julius Randle scored 28 points and Derrick Rose delivered 25 off the bench as the Knicks topped the Grizzlies. Taj Gibson grabbed 12 boards.

UTAH 110 – San Antonio 99… The Jazz led by 17 points at halftime and coasted past the Spurs. Bojan Bogdanovic scored 24 points to lead a balanced scoring attack. Rudy Gobert had 24 points and 15 rebounds.

L.A. LAKERS 93 – Denver 89… The Lakers hung on down the stretch to get past the Nuggets and snap their three-game skid. Anthony Davis led the way with 25 points.

CAROLINA 5 – Chicago 2… Sebastian Aho scored two of his three goals in the second period and the Hurricanes rolled past the Blackhawks. Dougie Hamilton had a goal and an assist. Vincent Trocheck added two assists.

Nashville 4 – COLUMBUS 3 (OT)… Roman Josi’s second goal of the game came 3:24 into overtime and sent the Predators past the Blue Jackets. Filip Forsberg had a goal and an assist.

MONTREAL 3 – Toronto 2 (OT)… Phillip Danault netted the tying goal with 52 seconds left in regulation and Cole Caulfield added the game-winner with 17 seconds to go in overtime as the Canadiens outlasted the Maple Leafs. Nick Suzuki had three assists.

OTTAWA 2 – Winnipeg 1… Nikita Zaitsev netted the decisive goal with 1:13 remaining as the Senators edged the Jets. Connor Brown scored a shorthanded goal in the first period. Filip Gustavsson made 28 saves at goal.

FLORIDA 5 – Dallas 4 (OT)… The Panthers recovered to outlast the Stars after blowing a two-goal third-period lead. Aleksander Barkov scored the game-winner 2:50 into overtime. Owen Tippett had two assists.

ST. LOUIS 3 – Anaheim 1… Robert Bortuzzo netted his first goal of the season to break a third-period tie and help the Blues down the Ducks. Brayden Schenn opened the scoring with a power-play goal in the second period.

MINNESOTA 6 – Vegas 5… The Wild came from two goals down midway through the third period to stun the Golden Knights. Kirill Kaprizov and Jonas Brodin scored 26 seconds apart in the final minute-and-a-half. Nick Bonino scored goals and assisted on another.

Los Angeles 3 – ARIZONA 2… Alex Iafallo’s power-play goal in the second period gave the Kings the lead for good in their win over the Coyotes. Anze Kopitar had a goal and an assist.

Edmonton 5 – VANCOUVER 3… Connor McDavid had two goals and two assists as the Oilers handled the Canucks and clinched a playoff spot. Leon Draisaitl assisted on two goals.

Colorado 5 – SAN JOSE 4 (OT)… The Avalanche came from two goals down in the third period to beat the Sharks. Andre Burakovsky found the net 43 seconds into overtime.
