CORONAVIRUS UPDATES… The number of confirmed coronavirus cases in the U.S. has reached 32,994,441 and the nation’s death toll stands at 586,359, according to figures released last night by Johns Hopkins University… The Biden administration announced yesterday that the U.S. will send an additional 20 million doses of COVID-19 vaccines overseas by the end of June. The announcement comes amid a drop in demand for vaccines domestically and an easing of pandemic measures for vaccinated people.

ALABAMA GOVERNOR SIGNS MEDICAL MARIJUANA BILL… Alabama Governor Kay Ivey signed into law yesterday a bill legalizing medical marijuana. The bill requires patients to have one of 16 qualifying medical conditions to purchase medical marijuana with the recommendation of a doctor. The bill takes effect immediately but it could take more than a year before medical marijuana is available in the state.

SUPREME COURT LIMITS WARRANTLESS SEARCHES.. The Supreme Court ruled in a 9-0 decision yesterday that a doctrine allowing police to carry out warrantless searches does not apply to entering private homes in some cases. The decision centered on a Rhode Island case in which police seized two handguns from the home of a man who had been in an altercation with his wife. Justices warned that upholding lower courts’ decisions would greatly expand the justifications for conducting warrantless searches.

GAETZ ALLY PLEADS GUILTY… The former tax collector of Seminole County, Florida, who is at the center of the Justice Department’s sex-trafficking investigation into Florida Republican Congressman Matt Gaetz, pleaded guilty yesterday to six federal charges and agreed to cooperate with prosecutors as part of a plea deal. Joel Greenberg, a longtime associate of Gaetz’s, had been facing nearly three dozen charges, including sex trafficking of a minor, and he admitted that he had paid at least one underage girl to have sex with him and other men. Gaetz was not mentioned in the plea agreement or during the court hearing.

GAS ELUSIVE AND EXPENSIVE… Gas shortages and rising gas prices continue in the Southeast even after the Colonial Pipeline has resumed operations following a ransomware attack. Gas prices in Georgia, North Carolina and South Carolina all jumped 21 cents over the past week, according to AAA data, while gas prices in Virginia and Tennessee climbed 18 cents. Nationally, average gas prices have jumped eight cents over the past week and reached $3.04 yesterday, according to data from the American Automobile Association.

WEEZER, GREEN DAY, FALL OUT BOY CONFIRM TOUR
… Weezer, Green Day and Fall Out Boy have confirmed their planned 2021 Hella Mega stadium tour with new dates added. The tour kicks off on July 24 in Dallas and concludes September 6 in Seattle. The new dates include the Summerfest festival in Milwaukee on September 1.

NBC EXTENDS ‘THE TONIGHT SHOW’… NBC announced yesterday that it has renewed “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon” for five years. The renewal follows Fallon signing a contract extension in November. Fallon replaced Jay Leno as host of “The Tonight Show” in February 2014.

San Francisco 6 – CINCINNATI 3
… Wilmer Flores slugged a two-run homer and the Giants got solo shots from Mike Yastrzemski and Mauricio Dubon in doubling up on the Reds. Starter Logan Webb (3-3) scattered six hits over six scoreless innings.

N.Y. Mets 3 – ATLANTA 1… James McCann doubled home a run and scored to break a scoreless tie in the to of the seventh inning and the Mets held off the Braves. Five New York pitchers combined on a three-hitter.

CHI. CUBS 7 – Washington 3… Willson Contreras, Jason Heyward and Javier Báez homered off former teammate Jon Lester and the Cubs spoiled his return to Chicago. Heyward also singled home a run.

L.A. DODGERS 3 – Arizona 1… Walker Buehler (2-0) pitched one-hit ball over seven innings and the Dodgers topped the Diamondbacks. Will Smith homered and Albert Pujols recorded his first RBI since signing with L.A.

SAN DIEGO 7 – Colorado 0… Padres starter Yu Darvish (4-1) held the Rockies to four hits over seven innings and struck out 10 before reliever Nabil Crismatt completed the shutout. Manny Machado provided all the offense San Diego needed with a two-run homer in the bottom of the first inning.

AMERICAN LEAGUE
Chi. White Sox 16 – MINNESOTA 4
… Danny Mendick unloaded a grand slam to highlight the White Sox’ pounding of the Twins. Nick Madrigal had three hits, including his first major league homer. Yermin Mercedes also went deep.

TEXAS 5 – N.Y. Yankees 2… The Rangers cruised past the Yankees to snap their six-game skid. Adolis Garcia and Willie Calhoun homered. Garcia was also credited with a steal of home. Jordan Lyles (2-3) surrendered a run on six hits over six innings.

L.A. ANGELS 7 – Cleveland 4… Shohei Ohtani connected for his major league-leading 13th homer with two runners aboard to help power the Angels past the Indians. Juan Lagaras stroked a tie-breaking two-run double in the bottom of the second inning.

Detroit 4 – SEATTLE 1… Eric Haase hit a pair of solo homers and Jonathan Schoop added a two-run shot as the Tigers downed the Mariners. Casey Mize (3-3) gave up a run on three hits over 7-2/3 innings.

Boston 4 – WASHINGTON 3… Brad Marchand found the net 39 seconds into overtime to send the Bruins past the Capitals and tie the East Division first-round series at a game apiece. Taylor Hall netted a tying goal with 2:49 left in regulation. Game 3 is tomorrow in Boston.

CAROLINA 5 – Nashville 2… The Hurricanes scored three unanswered goals in the third period to put away the Predators in the Central Division first-round opener. Jordan Staal scored two goals. Brett Pesce had two assists. Carolina hosts Game 2 tomorrow.

COLORADO 4 – St. Louis 1… Nathan MacKinnon netted a tie-breaking goal 30 seconds into the third period and added an empty-netter to lead the Avalanche past the Blues in the opener of the West Division first-round series. Gabriel Landeskog had a goal and two assists. Game 2 is tomorrow in Denver.
