CORONAVIRUS UPDATES… The number of confirmed coronavirus cases in the U.S. has reached 33,190,560 and the nation’s death toll stands at 591,953, according to figures released last night by Johns Hopkins University… The White House announced yesterday that President Joe Biden has asked U.S. intelligence agencies to “redouble their efforts” to find the origins of COVID-19. In March, Biden asked intelligence officials to prepare a report on the subject, with further insights into two possibilities: that it emerged from human contact with an infected animal or that it came from a lab accident.

9 DEAD IN CALIFORNIA RAIL YARD SHOOTING… An employee opened fire on co-workers at a rail yard in San Jose, California, yesterday, killing eight people before taking his own life. One person was critically wounded, authorities said. Investigators say the gunman set his own home on fire before committing America’s most recent mass shooting.

OKLAHOMA AG STEPPING DOWN… Oklahoma Attorney General Mike Hunter announced yesterday that he is resigning just days after he filed for divorce from his wife. The divorce follows reports of an alleged extramarital affair with another state employee. In his divorce filing, Hunter specified that he and his wife Cheryl faced “irreconcilable incompatibility.” Hunter had served as the state’s attorney general since 2017, and was expected to run for the position again in 2022.

FORD DISCUSSES ELECTRIC-VEHICLE SPENDING PLANS… Ford announced yesterday that it will raise electric vehicle spending to more than $30 billion within five years and expects 40 percent of its vehicles to be all-electric by 2030. CEO Jim Farley and other senior leaders discussed the company’s strategy as part of a “Delivering Ford+” event. The announcement sent Ford shares rising to a new 52-week high.

RUSSIA LEADS FACEBOOK DISINFORMATION EFFORTS… A threat report issued yesterday by Facebook claims Russia leads the world in pushing misinformation on the social media platform. Facebook said that of the 150 coordinated networks it has removed for inauthentic behavior, Russia operated 27. Iran followed close behind behind with 23, while nine came from within the U.S. The U.S. was the most popular target with 28 operations.

… Actor Chris Noth will be reprising his Mr. Big character in the upcoming “Sex and the City” revival on HBO Max. John Corbett, who plays Carrie’s former love interest Aidan Shaw, revealed his return last month. Former “Grey’s Anatomy” star Sara Ramírez announced earlier this month that she had joined the cast.

‘SCHOOL OF ROCK’ DRUMMER KILLED… Musician Kevin Clark, who played the boy drummer Freddy “Spazzy McGee” Jones in the 2003 comedy “School of Rock,” was killed yesterday morning in Chicago. He was 32. Authorities say Clark was riding a bicycle that was struck by a car and suffered fatal injuries. The 20-year-old woman who was driving the car was cited, but not arrested. Clark most recently has been the drummer in a local band and employed as a shift manager at a Starbucks.


Chi. Cubs 4 – PITTSBURGH 1
… Trevor Williams (3-2) held the Pirates to a run on three hits over six innings. David Bote homered with a runner aboard and Kris Bryant produced a pair of run-scoring singles for Chicago.

MIAMI 4 – Philadelphia 2… The Marlins scored three times in the bottom of the eighth inning to overtake the Phillies. Jon Berti tied the game with a two-run single and scored the go-ahead run on Jose Devers’ infield single.

San Diego 2 – MILWAUKEE 1 (10 innings)… Victor Caratini singled home Wil Meyers with the winning run in the bottom of the 10th inning as the Padres outlasted the Brewers.

San Francisco 5 – ARIZONA 4… The Giants overcame an early 4-0 deficit to edge the Diamondbacks. Jason Vosler’s first major-league homer was a solo shot in the top of the eighth inning. Austin Slater tied the game with a two-run homer two batters earlier.

Cincinnati – WASHINGTON (susp.)… Rain in the nation’s capital forced the suspension of last night’s Reds-Nationals game after 3 1/2 innings in a 3-3 tie. The game will resume this afternoon.

Colorado – N.Y. METS (ppd)… Rain in New York forced postponement of yesterday’s Rockies-Mets game. It will be made up as part of a doubleheader today.

MINNESOTA 3 – Baltimore 2
… Miguel Sanó cracked a three-run homer in the bottom of the sixth inning to power the Twins past the Orioles. Michael Pineda (3-2) gave up a run on three hits over six innings

OAKLAND 6 – Seattle 3… James Kaprielian (2-0) pitched two-hit ball over seven scoreless innings and the Athletics downed the Mariners to salvage the series finale. Seth Brown drove in a pair of runs with a ground-rule double and a single.

L.A. ANGELS 9 – Texas 8… The Angels built a 9-1 lead after five innings and barely hung on to top the Rangers. Taylor Ward hit a three run homer and singled home two runs. Justin Upton also went deep.

DETROIT 1 – Cleveland 0… Robbie Grossman’s sacrifice fly in the bottom of the eighth inning scored Niko Goodrum with the game’s only run as the Tigers clipped the Indians.

TAMPA BAY 2 – Kansas City 1 (10 innings)… Manuel Margot singled home Kevin Kiermaier in the bottom of the 10th inning to send the Rays past the Royals. Tampa Bay starter Tyler Glasnow limited Kansas City to three hits and struck out 11 over eight scoreless innings but didn’t get a decision.

Toronto – N.Y. YANKEES (ppd)… Rain in New York forced postponement of yesterday’s Blue Jays-Yankees game. It will be made up as part of a doubleheader today.

St. Louis 4 – CHI. WHITE SOX 0
… John Gant (4-3) surrendered five hits over five innings and three Cardinals relievers completed the shutout of the White Sox. Tommy Edman smacked a pair of two-out solo homers for the Cardinals.

Boston 9 – ATLANTA 5… The Red Sox slugged their way past the Braves after spotting them an early three-run lead. Rafael Devers homered with a runner aboard and doubled home a run. Christian Vazquez also knocked in three runs. Hunter Renfroe hit a bases-empty homer.

HOUSTON 5 – L.A. Dodgers 2… The Astros got homers from Jose Altuve, Carlos Correa and Aledmys Diaz in their win over the Dodgers. Luis Garcia (3-3) allowed just an unearned run on two hits over six innings.

PHILADELPHIA 120 – Washington 95… The 76ers breezed past the Wizards to take a 2-0 lead in the Eastern Conference first-round playoff series. Ben Simmons and Joel Embiid scored 22 points apiece to lead a balanced attack. The series moves to Washington for Game 3 on Saturday.

NEW YORK 101 – Atlanta 92… The Knicks rallied in the second half to get past the Hawks and even the series at a game apiece. Derrick Rose came off the bench to score 26 points. Julius Randle finished with 15 points and 12 rebounds. Atlanta hosts Game 3 tomorrow.

UTAH 141 – Memphis 129… Donovan Mitchell scored 25 points in his return from an ankle injury and the Jazz rolled past the Grizzlies to bring the series even at a game apiece. Rudy Gobert finished with 21 points and 13 boards. Mike Conley had 20 points and 15 assists. Game 3 is Saturday in Memphis.

N.Y. ISLANDERS 5 – Pittsburgh 3… Brock Nelson scored twice during a three-goal second period and the Islanders wrapped up the East Division first-round playoff series with the Game 6 victory. Anthony Beauvillier had a goal and two assists for New York, which advances to take on Boston in the second round.

TAMPA BAY 4 – Florida 0… Goalie Andrei Vasilevskiy stopped all 29 shots and the Lightning blanked the Panthers to take the Central Division first-round playoff series in six games. Steven Stamkos had a goal and an assist. Tampa Bay awaits the winner of the Carolina-Nashville series in the second round.

MINNESOTA 3 – Vegas 0… Goalie Cam Talbot made 23 saves for his second shutout of the series and the Wild blanked the Golden Knights to set up Game 7 in Vegas. Kevin Fiala had a goal and an assist as Minnesota scored all three goals in the third period.
