CORONAVIRUS UPDATES… The number of confirmed coronavirus cases in the U.S. has reached 33,264,415 and the nation’s death toll stands at 594,568, according to figures released last night by Johns Hopkins University… Health leaders worldwide warned yesterday that it’s still too soon to let up in the fight against COVID-19 despite declining infection rates. The U.S.’ leading infectious diseases expert, Dr. Anthony Fauci, cautioned that Americans can’t “declare victory prematurely” even though new cases have fallen to the lowest levels in 12 months.

BIDEN HONORS FALLEN VETS… President Joe Biden yesterday paid tribute to the men and women who gave their lives in service to their country during a ceremony at Arlington National Cemetery. In his Memorial Day message, Biden called on Americans to show more empathy toward one another and unite around the shared ideals America is built on. He also touched on several issues the country is currently grappling with, including voting rights and racial equality.

BIDEN IN TULSA… President Joe Biden is scheduled to be in Tulsa today to help mark the 100th anniversary of a massacre that destroyed a thriving Black community in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Biden will grieve for the more than 300 Black people killed at the hands of a white mob that looted and burned the Greenwood district to the ground. The 30-block historically Black district was known as the “Black Wall Street.”

TEXAS GOVERNOR THREATENS TO WITHHOLD PAY… Texas Governor Greg Abbott threatened yesterday to prevent lawmakers from being paid in response to the walkout staged by Democratic legislators on Sunday night to deny Republicans the quorum they needed to pass a sweeping election bill that was criticized as blatant voter suppression. Abbott, a Republican, vowed to veto Article 10 of the budget that funds the legislature. Abbott has until June 20 to enact his veto and deny the lawmakers their $600 a month and a $211 per diem for when they are in session, according to the Texas Tribune.

MASS SHOOTING FOILED IN TEXAS… Authorities in Texas believe they foiled a 28-year-old man’s plan to carry out a mass shooting at a Walmart. Police arrested the would-be mass shooter after investigators intercepted a message he posted on Facebook. Investigators said the man, Thomas Blevins of Kerrville, Texas, has some “affiliation and networking with extremist ideologies.”

ALASKA EARTHQUAKE… A 6.1-magnitude earthquake shook Southcentral Alaska yesterday but caused only minimal damage. The Alaska Earthquake Center said the temblor was centered 60 miles to the east of Talkeetna and 100 miles northeast of Anchorage. It was felt most strongly in the Matanuska-Susitna Valley and Anchorage areas. Residents reported items flying off the shelves.

… Rapper Lil Loaded died yesterday by suicide at age 20, his lawyer reported. The rapper, whose real name was Deshawn Robertson, was due in court today for a hearing in a manslaughter case he was facing in the death of his best friend. Lil Loaded’s 2019 song “6locc 6a6y” was certified gold just days ago.

WEEKEND BOX OFFICE… “A Quiet Place Part II” took in $47.4 million to blow away the weekend box office. Another newcomer, “Cruella,” made $21.3 million to finish second. Last week’s champ, “Spiral,” finished third with $2.2 million. “Wrath of Man” made $2.21 million to finish fourth. “Raya and the Last Dragon” capped the top five with $2 million.


CINCINNATI 11 – Philadelphia 1
… Kyle Farmer homered with a brother aboard and drove in runs to lead the Reds in the pounding of the Phillies. Max Schrock also went deep. Wade Miley (5-4) allowed a run on six hits over six innings.

CHI. CUBS 7 – San Diego 2… Javier Baez homered twice and drove in three runs for the Cubs in their win over the Padres. Patrick Wisdom had three hits, including a pair of solo homers. Kohl Stewart (1-0) allowed just an unearned run on three its over five innings.

ATLANTA 5 – Washington 3… William Contreras singled home a pair of runs and Ronald Acuña Jr. homered as the Braves topped the Nationals.

L.A. DODGERS 9 – St. Louis 4… Chris Taylor homered and stroked a tie-breaking three-run double to cap a 14-pitch at-bat in the bottom of the sixth inning as the Dodgers put away the Cardinals to snap a three-game skid. Gavin Lux hit two solo homers.

N.Y. Mets 6 – ARIZONA 2… Pete Alonso homered and knocked in four runs for the Mets. Billy McKinney also went deep. Jacob deGrom (4-2) pitched two-hit ball over six scoreless innings.

Minnesota 3 – BALTIMORE 2
(10 innings)… The Twins scored twice in the top of the 10th inning and hung on to hand the Orioles their 14th straight loss. Jorge Polanco homered with the bases empty.

Tampa Bay 3 – N.Y. YANKEES 1… Rich Hill (4-2) limited the Yankees to three hits over five scoreless innings and the Rays won for the 16th time in 17 games. Austin Meadows smacked a solo homer.

Chi. White Sox 8 – CLEVELAND 6 (8 innings)… Adam Eaton belted a two-run homer and Jose Abreu lifted a sacrifice fly as the White Sox scored three times in the top of the eighth inning to put away the Indians in the opener of a doubleheader.

CLEVELAND 3 – Chi. White Sox 1 (7 innings)… Jose Ramirez connected for a tie-breaking two-run homer in the bottom of the third inning and the Indians topped the White Sox to claim a split of the twinbill.

HOUSTON 11 – Boston 2… Kyle Tucker went 3-for-5 with four RBIs in leading the Astros in their rout of the Red Sox. Jose Altuve homered with a runner aboard. Jose Urquidy (4-2) surrendered a run on three hits over six innings.

SEATTLE 6 – Oakland 5 (10 innings)… Ty France singled home a run and scored on Murphy’s sacrifice fly in the bottom of the 10th inning as the Mariners upended the Athletics. Donovan Walton cracked a three-run homer for Seattle.

MILWAUKEE 3 – Detroit 2
(10 innings)… Luis Urías singled home Omar Narvaez with the winning run in the bottom of the 10th inning and the Brewers made it five straight wins. Wily Adames tied the game with a two-run homer in the sixth.

SAN FRANCISCO 6 – L.A. Angels 1… Johnny Cueto (4-1) held the Angels to a run on five hits over seven innings and the Giants cruised to the win. LaMonte Wade Jr., Mauricio Dubon and Evan Longoria hit solo homers for San Francisco.

KANSAS CITY 7 – Pittsburgh 3… Adalberto Mondesi hit a two-run homer and Kelvin Gutierrez drove in two runs for the Royals. Mike Minor (4-2) allowed two runs on five hits over six innings.

WASHINGTON 122 – Philadelphia 114… The Wizards gained control with a big third quarter and held off the 76ers to avoid being swept in the Eastern Conference first-round playoff series. Bradley Beal pumped in 27 points. Rui Hachimura had 20 points and 13 rebounds. Russell Westbrook racked up 19 points, 21 boards and 14 assists. Game 5 is tomorrow in Philadelphia.

Utah 120 – MEMPHIS 113… The Jazz handled the Grizzlies to take a commanding 3-1 lead in the Western Conference first-round playoff series. Donovan Mitchell scored a game-high 30 points. Jordan Clarkson delivered 24 points off the bench. Game 5 is tomorrow in Salt Lake City.

Tyler Toffoli scored in the third. Eric Staal assisted on two goals. Goalie Carey Price made 29 saves. Montreal visits Winnipeg tomorrow to open the second-round series.

N.Y. Islanders 4 – BOSTON 3 (OT)… Casey Cizikas scored a breakaway goal 14:48 into overtime and the Islanders evened the East Division second-round playoff series at a game apiece. Kyle Palmieri and Jean-Gabriel Pageau each had a goal and an assist during a three-goal second period. The series moves to Brooklyn for Game 3 on Thursday.

Tampa Bay is at Carolina for Game 2 of the Central Division second-round playoff series with the Lightning leading 1-0
