CORONAVIRUS UPDATES… The number of confirmed coronavirus cases in the U.S. has reached 33,625,036 and the nation’s death toll stands at 603,967 , according to figures released last night by Johns Hopkins University… Former Food and Drug Administration commissioner Dr. Scott Gottlieb warned of “very dense outbreaks” of Delta variant. During an appearance on CBS News’ “Face the Nation,” said the outbreaks will be “hyper-regionalized,” and occur in pockets. The most vulnerable areas continue to be those with low vaccination rates and low rates of immunity from prior infections.

DEATH TOLL AT 9 FOLLOWING CONDO COLLAPSE… Authorities in South Florida say nine people have been confirmed dead following Thursday’s collapse of a condominium complex in Seaside. At least 156 people remained unaccounted for and 130 others were accounted for as crews continue to search. The cause of the collapse is still under investigation, but a 2018 engineering report warned of structural failure.

AIRSTRIKES TARGET IRAN-BACKED MILITIAS… The Pentagon announced yesterday that President Joe Biden ordered airstrikes on Iran-backed militias near the Iraq-Syria border over the weekend in response to unmanned aerial vehicle attacks. Pentagon Press Secretary John Kirby said the U.S. acted within its legal rights and said the airstrikes were a matter of self-defense. U.S. Air Force F-15s and F-16s from U.S. bases in the Central Command region carried out the airstrikes with precision-guided munitions.

FORMER ALASKA SENATOR MIKE GRAVEL DIES… Former Alaska Senator Mike Gravel died at his home in Seaside, California, yesterday after a battle with multiple myeloma. He was 91. Gravel was elected to the U.S. Senate in 1968, where he served until 1981. He gained widespread attention for reading the Pentagon Papers into the Congressional Record amid the nation’s war in Vietnam in order to help end it. After a failed presidential campaign in 2006, he joined the Libertarian Party and ran again in 2020 on the ending U.S. involvement in wars and cutting defense spending.

NORTHWEST FEELING THE HEAT… Meteorologists say the current heat wave in the Northwest is as unprecedented as it is dangerous. Temperatures in Portland, Oregon, are expected to reach 114 degrees today after reaching 115 yesterday. The highest temperature ever recorded in the state is 117 degrees, which was set in Umatilla on July 27, 1939. Seattle is expected to swelter in temperatures as high as 110 degrees.

OLIVIA RODRIGO TOPS ALBUM CHART
… Olivia Rodrigo’s “Sour” sold 105,000 copies in returning to the top of the Billboard 200 album chart. Last week’s champ, Polo G’s “Hall of Fame,” slipped into second place with 65,000 units sold. Lil Baby and Lil Durk’s “The Voice of the Heroes” finished third on sales of 57,000 copies. Migos’ “Culture III” dropped to fourth after selling 54,000 units. Morgan Wallen’s “Dangerous: The Double Album” remained at No. 5 with 49,000 copies sold.

WEEKEND BOX OFFICE… “F9: The Fat Saga” took in $70 million to blow away the weekend box office. “A Quiet Place Part II” finished in a distant second place with $6.2 million. “The Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard” fell from first to third with $4.87 million. “Peter Rabbit 2: The Runaway” made $4.85 million to finish fourth. “Cruella” capped the top five with $3.7 million.

… Zack Wheeler (6-4) pitched four-hit ball over eight scoreless innings and the Phillies held off the Mets. Nick Maton had a couple of hits, including an RBI double.

Atlanta 4 – CINCINNATI 0… Kyle Muller (1-1) limited the Reds to one it over five innings and five relievers preserved the shutout. Ronald Acuña Jr. and Austin Riley smacked solo homers for the Braves.

Washington 5 – MIAMI 1… Trea Turner and Josh Bell hit two-run homers in the top of the sixth inning and the Nationals put away the Marlins. Max Scherzer (7-4) gave up a run on five hits over six innings.

MILWAUKEE 5 – Colorado 0… Eric Bauer (2-3) allowed just two hits over six innings and got help from three relievers in the blanking of the Rockies. Omar Narváez and
Keston Hiura homered for the Brewers.

Pittsburgh 7 – ST. LOUIS 2… Max Kranick (1-0) pitched five perfect innings in his major-league debt and the Pirates handled the Cardinals. Gregory Polanco and Ben Gamel hit solo homers.

SAN DIEGO 5 – Arizona 4… Fernando Tatis Jr. stroked a tie-breaking RBI double double to cap a three-run bottom of the seventh inning and the Padres hung on to edge the Diamondbacks and finish off a series sweep. Tommy Pham homered to lead off the first.

L.A. DODGERS 7 – Chi. Cubs 1… Zach McKinstry unloaded a grand slam and Cody Bellinger homered with a runner aboard during a six-run bottom of the second inning and the Dodgers breezed past the Cubs. Bellinger added a sacrifice fly in the sixth. Clayton Kershaw (9-7) gave up a run on four hits and struck out 13 over eight innings.

AMERICAN LEAGUE
Seattle 3 – CHI. WHITE SOX 2
… Taylor Trammell’s second homer of the game came with two outs in the top of the ninth inning and lifted the Mariners over the White Sox in the makeup of a game rained out the night before. Seattle reliever Hector Santiago became the first player to be ejected as part of Major League Baseball’s new foreign substance protocols when umpires tossed him after the fifth inning.

CHI. WHITE SOX 7 – Seattle 5 (7 innings)… Zack Collins’ bases-clearing double capped a four-run bottom of the fourth inning that carried the White Sox over the Mariners in the nightcap. Yermin Mercedes singled, doubled and knocked in three runs.

TORONTO 5 – Baltimore 2… Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and Cavan Biggio drove in two runs apiece for the Blue Jays. Ross Stripling (3-4) held the Orioles to two runs on six hits over five innings and four relievers held them scoreless the rest of the way.

L.A. Angels 6 – TAMPA BAY 4… Shohei Ohtani doubled, tripled, homered and knocked in three runs to lead the Angels past the Rays. Phil Gosselin singled home a run and homered.

DETROIT 2 – Houston 1 (1O innings)… Robbie Grossman bunted home Akii Baddoo with the winning run in the bottom of the 10th inning as the Tigers outlasted the Astros. Badoo singled home a tying run in the seventh.

BOSTON 9 – N.Y. Yankees 2… The Red Sox cruised past the Yankees to complete a series sweep. Rafael Devers belted a three-run homer and singled home a run. Kiké Hernandez, J.D. Martinez and Christian Vazquez also went deep. Eduardo Rodriguez (6-4) allowed two runs on five hits over six innings.

MINNESOTA 8 – Cleveland 2… Nelson Cruz blasted a three-run homer, Andrelton Simmons homered with a runner aboard and Josh Donaldson smacked a solo shot in powering the Twins past the Indians. J.A. Happ (4-3) surrendered two runs on six hits over six innings.

TEXAS 4 – Kansas City 1… Adolis Garcia tripled home a run and Joey Gallo hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the first inning and the Rangers coasted past the Royals. Jordan Lyles (3-5) gave up a run on seven hits over seven innings.

INTERLEAGUE
Oakland 6 – SAN FRANCISCO 2
… Matt Chapman and Aramis Garcia each had a pair of RBIs and the Athletics topped the Giants. Cole Irvin (6-7) pitched three-hit ball over eight scoreless innings.

Milwaukee 113 – ATLANTA 102… The Bucks pulled past the Hawks in the fourth quarter and have taken a 2-1 lead in the Eastern Conference finals. Khris Middleton made six 3-pointers on his way to a game-high 38 points and pulled down 11 rebounds. Giannis Antetokounmpo added 33 points and 11 boards. The series remains in Atlanta for Game 4 tomorrow.

STANLEY CUP FINALS BEGINS TONIGHT… Montreal visits defending-champion Tampa Bay tonight in Game 1 of the Stanley Cup finals. The Canadiens have made an improbable post-season run to reach the Cup Final for the first time since winning the championship in 1993. After finishing fourth in the North Division in the regular season, they outlasted Toronto in seven games, swept Winnipeg and eliminated Vegas in six games. Tyler Toffoli, with five goals and nine assists, leads the Canadiens with 14 points in the playoffs. Tampa Bay opened its defense of the Cup with a six-game win over Florida and then got past Carolina in five games and defeated the N.Y. Islanders in seven games. Nikita Kucherov, with five goals and 22 assists, is the NHL’s leading playoff scorer with 27 points.
