CORONAVIRUS UPDATES… The number of confirmed coronavirus cases in the U.S. has reached 33,790,468 and the nation’s death toll stands at 606,475, according to figures released last night by Johns Hopkins University… The pharmaceutical company Pfizer announced yesterday that it plans to seek federal approval for a third shot that would ideally be administered between six and 12 months after the second vaccine. The company said initial tests have shown that a booster shot could dramatically improve protection against the virus and even the Delta variant. Additionally, Pfizer and BioNTech are also reportedly developing an updated vaccine that would specifically target the Delta variant, which is now the dominant strain in the U.S. and many other countries. The companies said real-world evidence from the Israel Ministry of Health showed vaccine efficacy has declined in the six months following vaccination.

BIDEN PUSHES UP AFGHANISTAN PULLOUT… President Joe Biden announced yesterday that the U.S. will end its military mission in Afghanistan on August 31. “The United States did what we went to do in Afghanistan. To get the terrorists who attacked us on 9/11 and deliver justice to Osama Bin laden, and to degrade the terrorist threat to keep Afghanistan from becoming a base from which attacks could be continued against the United States,” Biden said in announcing the pullout. The president previously set an exit date of September 11 but the process went more quickly than expected. Biden added that the U.S. will keep providing civilian humanitarian aid to the country after ending military operations.

JUSTICE DEPARTMENT AVOIDS HATE-CRIME CASES… A Justice Department report released yesterday found that the Justice Department declined to prosecute 82 percent of suspects accused of committing hate crimes. Of the 310 defendants who were adjudicated, more than 90 percent were convicted. More than 85 percent of those convicted of a hate crime received an average prison sentence of 7-1/2 years with about 14 percent sentenced to probation and 1 percent given suspended sentences.
