CORONAVIRUS UPDATE… The number of confirmed coronavirus cases in the U.S. has reached 4,771,087 and the nation’s death toll stands at 156,806, according to figures released last night by Johns Hopkins University… Governors from seven states have formed an interstate compact to expand COVID-19 testing. The effort would fund the purchase of more than three million rapid point-of-care antigen tests for the coronavirus. Maryland, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Michigan, Ohio, Virginia and North Carolina are the states that have signed on.

PRIMARIES IN FIVE STATES… Five states held primary elections yesterday, with some high profile members of Congress vying against party challengers from within their parties. The upset of the day so far was 20-year U.S. congressman William Lacy Clay’s Missouri Democratic primary loss to Cori Bush, a nurse and Black Lives Matter Activist. Clay had represented his district since 2001. In a closely-watched contest in Kansas, U.S. Congressman Roger Marshall defeated Trump ally Kris Kobach in the Republican Senate primary and will face Democratic state Senator Barbara Bollier in the general election. Also in Kansas, first-term U.S. Congressman Steve Watkins was unseated by State Treasurer Jake Laturner in the Republican primary. Rashida Tlaib withstood challenger Brenda Jones in Michigan’s District 13 Democratic primary. There were also key races in Arizona and Washington state.

DHS PLANS UNIFORM REPLACEMENT… Acting Department of Homeland Security Deputy Secretary Ken Cuccinelli revealed in congressional testimony released yesterday that DHS is planning to replace the military-style camouflage uniforms worn by federal law enforcement officers in recent domestic crackdowns on protests. Cuccinelli said the department is moving rapidly to make the change. DHS was widely condemned for using officers in non-identifying uniforms to round up protesters in unmarked vehicles.

EX-GOOGLE ENGINEER SENTENCED IN TRADE-SECRET CASE… A founding engineer of Google’s self-driving car project was sentenced yesterday to 18 months in prison for trade secret theft. Anthony Levandowski was accused of loading more than 14,000 Google files onto his laptop before leaving the firm in January 2016. U.S. District Judge William Alsup in San Francisco called Levandowski’s crime the “biggest trade secret crime I have ever seen.” Levandowski went on to lead Uber’s robocar project but was fired in 2017 over the trade secret-theft allegations.

ISAIAS BLAMED FOR AT LEAST 6 DEATHS… Tropical Storm Isaias was blamed for the deaths of at least six people yesterday as it spawned tornadoes and dumped rain along the East Coast on its way into Canada. Authorities reported two deaths in North Carolina and one each in Pennsylvania, Maryland, New York City and Delaware. Isaias was downgraded to a tropical storm early after it made landfall around 11:10 p.m. Monday near Ocean Isle Beach, North Carolina.

… Neil Young has filed a copyright infringement lawsuit against President Trump’s reelection campaign, alleging it used the musician’s songs at rallies without permission. The complaint, filed in U.S. District Court, Southern District of New York, alleges Trump’s campaign has been using Young’s songs “Rockin in the Free World” and “Devil’s Sidewalk” at campaign events. The suit wants Trump barred from using the Young’s songs at future events and seeks statutory damages.

‘WHO’S THE BOSS?’ REBOOT IN PRODUCTION… Tony Danza and Alyssa Milano have signed on to reprise their roles as father-and-daughter duo Tony and Samantha Micelli in a “Who’s the Boss?” sequel series currently in development. Sony Pictures Television announced yesterday that the modern-day sequel will take place in the same home where the original sitcom was set during its 1984 to 1992 run, but the update centers on the pair’s relationship 30 years later, when Samantha is a single mother. It’s not known whether original show stars Judith Light and Danny Pintauro will appear in the reboot.

MINNESOTA 7 – Pittsburgh 3
… The Twins ripped the Pirates for their fifth straight win. Nelson Cruz went 3-for-4 with an RBI. Jose Berrios (1-1) allowed just a run on four hits over six innings.

Cleveland 4 – CINCINNATI 2… The Indians rallied past the Reds after spotting them a two-run lead. Franmil Reyes belted a tie-breaking two-run homer in the top of the eighth inning. Shane Bieber (3-0) allowed two runs on five hits over 7-2/3 innings.

TAMPA BAY 5 – Boston 1… The Rays snapped a five-game skid and dealt the Red Sox their fourth straight loss. Charlie Morton (1-1) limited Boston to a run on five hits over 5-2/3 innings.

WASHINGTON 5 – N.Y. Mets 3… The Nationals built a 5-0 lead after three innings and coasted past the Mets. Howie Kendrick went 4-for-4 with a solo homer. Jose Harrison went deep with a runner aboard.

ATLANTA 10 – Toronto 1… Max Fried (2-0) held the Blue Jays to a run on four hits over six innings and got plenty of support offensively. Austin Riley blasted a three-run homer. Tyler Flowers and Matt Adams added solo shots.

Miami 4 – BALTIMORE 0… Pablo Lopez (1-0) pitched two-hit ball over five innings and got help from four relievers in the Marlins’ blanking of the Orioles. Jesus Aguilar and Francisco Cervelli homered.

Chi. White Sox 3 – MILWAUKEE 2… The White Sox came from two runs down in the sixth inning to edge the Brewers for their sixth straight win. Jose Abreu singled home the go-ahead run in the top of the seventh. Eloy Jimenez connected for a two-run blast.

CHI. CUBS 5 – Kansas City 4… The Cubs held off the Royals to run their winning streak to five games. They got homers from Jason Heyward, Jason Kipnis and Willson Contreras.

COLORADO 5 – San Francisco 2… German Marques (2-1) pitched into the eighth inning and the Rockies won their eighth in 10 games. Nolan Arenado homered with the bases empty.

OAKLAND 5 – Texas 1… Stephen Piscotty unloaded the Athletics’ second walkoff grand slam of the season in the bottom of the ninth inning. Matt Chapman also went deep for Oakland.

L.A. Dodgers 5 – SAN DIEGO 2… AJ Pollock came through with a pinch-hit go-ahead double in the top of the seventh inning and added a solo homer to lead the Dodgers past the Padres. Dustin May (1-0) allowed two runs on three hits over six innings.

Houston 8 – ARIZONA 2… The Astros used a five-run top of the fifth inning to break open a close game and cruised past the Diamondbacks. Jose Altuve and Carlos Correa homered. Cristian Javier limited Arizona to a run on four hits over six innings.

L.A. Angels 5 – SEATTLE 3… David Fletcher and Albert Pujols hit two-run homers, Mike Trout added a solo shot and the Angels topped the Mariners. Andrew Heaney (1-0) surrendered a run on three hits over 5-2/3 innings.

Philadelphia – N.Y. YANKEES (ppd)… Rain in New York forced postponement of last night’s Phillies-Yankees game. It will be made up as part of a doubleheader today.

Phoenix 117 – L.A. Clippers 115… Devin Booker scored on a turnaround jumper at the buzzer to lift the Suns over the Clippers. Booker’s 35 points led all scorers.

Indiana 120 – Orlando 109… The Pacers cruised past the Magic for their third straight victory. T.J. Warren pumped in a game-high 32 points. Myles Turner tossed in 21 points.

Miami 112 – Boston 106… The Heat led from start to finish in their defeat of the Celtics. Bam Adebayo and Duncan Robinson had 21 points apiece. Adebayo also grabbed 12 boards.

Portland 110 – Houston 102… The Trail Blazers were too much down the stretch in downing the Rockets. Damian Lilliard scored 21 points and CJ McCollum added 20 to lead a balanced scoring attack. Jusuf Nukic had 18 points and 19 rebounds. Carmelo Anthony knocked down a clutch 3-pointer at the end and totaled 15 points and 11 boards.

CORONAVIRUS UPDATE… The number of confirmed coronavirus cases in the U.S. has reached 4,713,562 and the nation’s death toll stands at 155,403, according to figures released last night by Johns Hopkins University… An internal FEMA memo obtained by ABC News indicated an 8.8-percent decrease last week in new cases from the previous week, but there was a 24-percent increase in deaths. There were 7,925 COVID-19 deaths in the U.S. between July 26 and August 2, according to the memo.

MANHATTAN DA SUGGESTS TRUMP INVESTIGATION… The Manhattan District Attorney’s Office suggested yesterday that the Trump Organization is under investigation for alleged insurance and bank fraud. Prosecutors told the judge that the demand was justified due to public reports of “extensive and protracted criminal conduct at the Trump Organization” and argued that the president wasn’t entitled to know the exact nature of the “complex financial investigation.” Trump’s legal team has argued that the subpoena for his tax filings was issued in bad faith and amounts to harassment of the president.

HOUSE PANEL TO PROBE FED RESPONSE TO PORTLAND… The House Intelligence Committee announced yesterday that it will investigate the Department of Homeland Security’s use of federal agents to quell protests in Portland, Oregon. Committee chairman, Congressman Adam Schiff called the response “troubling” in a letter to acting DHS Secretary Chad Wolf. Oregon Governor Kate Brown announced last week that the government had agreed to withdraw agents from Portland, but Wolf and President Donald Trump have since insisted that protests must end first.

HOUSE PANEL SUBPOENAS IG FIRING ‘KEY WITNESSES’… The House Foreign Affairs Committee yesterday subpoenaed four “key witnesses” for an investigation into President Trump’s firing of State Department Inspector General Steve Linick in May. The panel will try to establish whether Linick was fired in retaliation for investigating Secretary of State Mike Pompeo’s role in a controversial $8 billion weapons sale to Saudi Arabia. Linick has testified that Under secretary of State for Management Brian Bulatao, tried to bully him into ending the investigation. Yesterday’s subpoenas went to Bulatao, State Department acting legal adviser Marik String, Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Political-Military Affairs Michael Miller and adviser Toni Porter.

ISAIAS MAKES LANDFALL… Hurricane Isaias made landfall near Ocean Isle Beach, North Carolina, yesterday with maximum sustained winds of 85 mph and is expected to max out as it travels north. The U.S. National Hurricane Center warned of storm surges up to 5 feet and up to 8 inches of rain as it Isaias rips along the Carolina coasts. Forecasters warned of possible tornadoes in North Carolina this morning and from eastern Virginia to southern New England later today.

… MSNBC announced a shuffling of its weekday lineup yesterday. Nicolle Wallace, a former George W. Bush administration communications director and John McCain presidential campaign adviser, is getting a second hour added to her 4 p.m. show. Chuck Todd, whose “Meet the Press Daily” show had been airing at 5 p.m. ET, has been moved to 1 p.m. The changes take effect on August 14.

ACTOR RENI SANTONI DIES… Actor Reni Santoni, best known for his roles as Inspector Chico Gonzalez in “Dirty Harry” and Poppie the restaurant owner on “Seinfeld,” has died following an extended illness, friends confirmed yesterday. He was 81. Santoni got his start performing in off-Broadway productions and also appeared in the movies “Bad Boys” and “28 Days.”

… The Atlanta Braves have lost their top starting pitcher Mike Soroka for the season. Soroka suffered a torn right Achilles tendon during the third inning of last night’s game against the New York Mets in a freak injury. After J.D. Davis hitter a grounder toward first baseman Freddie Freeman, Soroka broke toward first to cover the bag but fell on his first step off the mound. The righthander, who turns 22 today, was an NL All Star for the Braves last season, when he went 13-4 with a 2.68 ERA.

N.Y. Mets 7 – ATLANTA 2
… Wilson Ramos homered with a runner aboard and singled home a run for the Mets. Robinson Cano also knocked in three runs.

COLORADO 7 – San Francisco 6… Nolan Arenado’s two-run homer sparked a five-run bottom of the fifth inning and the Rockies rallied past the Giants. Chris Owings also went deep.

SAN DIEGO 5 – L.A. Dodgers 4… Fernando Tatis Jr. Trent Grisham and Wil Myers drilled solo homers. Jake Cronenworth singled home the go-ahead run in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Oakland 11 – SEATTLE 1
… The Athletics came alive to score eight runs after there were two outs in the top of the fifth inning. Ramon Laureano and Chad Pinder produced two-run singles during the uprising. Starter Frankie Montas (1-1) allowed just a run on four hits and struck out nine over seven innings.

CINCINNATI 3 – Cleveland 2
… The Reds powered their way past the Indians after spotting them a two-run lead. Joey Votto blasted a two-run go-ahead homer in the bottom of the sixth inning after Nick Castellanos went deep in the fourth. Starter Sonny Gray (3-0) allowed a run on four hits over six innings.

N.Y. YANKEES 6 – Philadelphia 3… Gio Urshela’s three-run homer in the bottom of the sixth inning proved to be the difference in the Yankees’ defeat of the Phillies. Brett Gardner and DJ LeMahieu also homered.

Chi. White Sox 6 – MILWAUKEE 4… The White Sox pulled past the Brewers in the late innings to ruin their home opener. Jose Abreu belted a game-tying two-run homer in the top of the seventh inning. Yoan Moncada went deep in the ninth.

MINNESOTA 5 – Pittsburgh 4… Nelson Cruz singled home Jorge Polanco with the winning run in the bottom of the ninth inning to give the Twins a come-from-behind win over the Pirates. Max Kepler stroked a two-run double as Minnesota tied the game with a four-run sixth.

CHI. CUBS 2 – Kansas City 0… Alex Mills (2-0) pitched three-hit ball over seven innings and two relievers completed the Cubs’ blanking of the Royals. Kris Bryant homered and Javier Baez lifted a sacrifice fly for Chicago.

Pittsburgh 3 – Montreal 1… The Penguins got goals from Sidney Crosby, Jason Zucker and Jake Guentzel in downing the Canadiens to tie the series at 1-1. Goalie Matt Murray made 27 saves and came within 2:09 of a shutout.

Edmonton 6 – Chicago 3… Connor McDavid scored three goals in his first playoff hat trick and the Oilers doubled up on the Blackhawks to even the series at a game apiece.
