CORONAVIRUS UPDATES… The number of confirmed coronavirus cases in the U.S. has reached 33,377,696 and the nation’s death toll stands at 597,949, according to figures released last night by Johns Hopkins University… New York Governor Andrew Cuomo indicated that the state could lift its remaining COVID-19 restrictions in most settings within days when 70 percent of its adult population has been at least partially vaccinated. Currently, 68.6 percent of New Yorkers ages 18 and over have received at least one shot.

UKRAINIAN PRESIDENT TO VISIT WHITE HOUSE… Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky as accepted President Joe Biden’s invitation to visit the White House this summer. Biden extended the invitation ahead of his scheduled meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin next week. Biden and Putin are expected to discuss Moscow’s aggression in Ukraine, including the massing of troops along their common border earlier this year.

VP HARRIS IN GUATEMALA… Vice President Kamala Harris told Guatemalan President Alejandro Giammattei yesterday that Central Americans must be provided “a sense of hope that help is on the way” before the ongoing migrant crisis can be solved. During their meeting in Guatemala City, Harris acknowledged to her host that “there is work that we can do together to grow the capacity of those resources and to reach the people.” Harris is making her first trip abroad as vice president while heading White House efforts to stem immigration at the southern U.S. border. She is also meeting with leaders of Mexico, Honduras and El Salvador.

DoJ RECOVERS CYBER RANSOM… The Justice Department announced yesterday that it has recovered more than half of the ransom that was paid to the hackers who targeted the Colonial Pipeline and caused widespread gas shortages on the East Coast. The Justice Department says it has reclaimed around $2.3 million of the $4.4 million in Bitcoin that Colonial Pipeline paid out to DarkSide after investigating the cybercriminals for over a year. In making the payment, Colonial Pipeline notified the FBI and followed protocols that allowed law enforcement to track the cryptocurrency.

SENATE PASSES ‘HAVANA SYNDROME’ BILL…The Senate yesterday passed a bill that offers financial support to U.S. diplomatic staff who have suffered brain injuries resulting from the mysterious set of symptoms known to have afflicted scores of American personnel over several years. The Helping American Victims Afflicted by Neurological Attacks authorizes more compensation for State Department and CIA employees who have been injured by the so-called “Havana Syndrome.” It passed by unanimous consent. House Intelligence Chairman Adam Schiff has introduced companion legislation in the House.

ENTERTAINMENT
SPRINGSTEEN RETURNS TO BROADWAY
… Bruce Springsteen’s solo Broadway show, “Springsteen on Broadway,” is making a revival later this month. The show is one of the first to be performed on Broadway since the Covid-19 pandemic. It is being performed at the St. James Theater, where all audience members must prove they’re fully vaccinated. “Springsteen on Broadway” originally played 236 performances in 2017 and 2018, earning a Special Tony Award. The show features Springsteen mixing songs with stories about his life taken from his 2016 autobiography “Born to Run.”

SINÉAD O’CONNOR RETIRES… Sinéad O’Connor has announced that she’s retiring from “touring and working in the record business.” The 54-year-old Irish singer says in an online post that it’s time to “make other dreams come true.” O’Connor, who recently released book “Rememberings,” rose to fame in the early ’90s following her rendition of the Prince-written song “Nothing Compares 2 U.”

CORONAVIRUS UPDATES… The number of confirmed coronavirus cases in the U.S. has reached 33,362,153 and the nation’s death toll stands at 597,624, according to figures released last night by Johns Hopkins University… The number of vaccine doses administered in the U.S. topped 300 million yesterday, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced. The seven-day average of new daily cases reported has decreased from 65,053 on April 1 to 12,780 on June 5. The seven-day average of new daily deaths reported decreased from 681 to 367 during the same time period, according to the CDC.

ROUGH START TO VP HARRIS’ TRIP… Kamala Harris overcame a rough start to make her first trip abroad as vice president yesterday. A plane carrying Harris on a trip to Guatemala and Mexico was forced to return to Joint Base Andrews in Maryland about 30 minutes after takeoff due to a technical issue. The vice president departed in another plane about an hour and a half later. Harris is set to spend two days meeting with the presidents of her two host nations and checking in with organizers helping stem migration.

SWALWELL FINALLY SERVES BROOKS… California Democratic Congressman Eric Swalwell has succeeded in serving his Republican counterpart from Alabama, Mo Brooks, with a lawsuit seeking to hold him partially accountable for the January 6 insurrection. Recent court filings revealed that Swalwell’s legal team had to hire a private investigator to find Brooks and give him the papers after the congressman began purposely evading their attempts. The papers were reportedly served to Brooks at his home via his wife.

3 DEAD, 6 INJURED IN MIAMI-DADE SHOOTING… Three people were fatally shot and six others were injured early yesterday in a mass shooting at a graduation party outside a strip-mall restaurant in Kendall, Florida. It was Miami-Dade County’s second mass shooting in two weeks. Police said gunfire erupted after two cars pulled up into the strip mall and someone inside one of the vehicles opened fire on people leaving the restaurant.

OLDEST MALE CHIMP IN U.S. ZOO DIES AT 63… The San Francisco Zoo has announced the death of the oldest male chimpanzee in an accredited U.S. zoo. Cobby died Saturday at age 63, the zoo said, and is missed by many. The average life expectancy of the 100,000 to 200,000 chimpanzees that remain living in the wild is about 33 years, according to zoo officials, but they can live twice as long under human care.

ACTOR CLARENCE WILLIAMS III DIES
… Actor Clarence Williams III died Friday of complications from colon cancer, his management announced yesterday. He was 81. Williams as best known for playing detective Linc Hayes in the 1960s cop drama “The Mod Squad” and as Prince’s father in “Purple Rain.” His television roles included an FBI agent in “Twin Peaks” and an alien in “Star Trek: Deep Space Nine.”

TAYLOR SWIFT TOPS ALBUM CHART… Taylor Swift’s “Evermore” sold 202,000 copies in returning to No. 1 on the Billboard 200 album chart for a fourth nonconsecutive week. Last week’s champ, Olivia Rodrigo’s “Sour,” slipped into second place with 186,000 units sold. J. Cole’s “The Off-Season” dropped to third place after selling 58,000 copies. Morgan Wallen’s “Dangerous: The Double Album” stayed in fourth place with sales of 52,000 units. Moneybagg Yo’s “A Gangsta’s Pain” sold 43,000 copies to stay at No. 5.

N.Y. Mets 6 – SAN DIEGO 2… Marcus Stroman (5-4) surrendered just an unearned run on four hits over 6-2/3 innings and the Mets cruised past the Padres. Houston 6 – TORONTO 3… Luis Garcia (5-3) gave up just a run on three hits over six innings and the Astros doubled up on the Blue Jays. Jose Altuve homered to lead off the game. Chas McCormick led off the second with a homer. Kyle Tucker had a couple of hits, including a two-run single.

WHITE SOX 3 – Detroit 0… Three pitchers combined on the shutout to give White Sox manager Tony La Russa 2,764th win as manager and move him past John McGraw into sole possession of second place on baseball’s all-time manager wins list. Dylan Cease (4-2) pitched five-hit ball over seven innings and struck out 10. Andrew Vaughn singled home a run and Tim Anderson added a two-run single as Chicago scored all three runs in the bottom of the second inning.

Minnesota 2 – KANSAS CITY 1… Trevor Larnach was hit by a pitch in the top of the fifth inning to force home a tie-breaking run and the Twins hung on to edge the Royals. Miguel Sanó doubled home a run in the third inning and was part of a triple-play defensively.

Tampa Bay 7 – TEXAS 1… The Rays came alive to do all their scoring in their final two at-bats and put away the Rangers. Yandy Diaz homered to cap a four-run top of the ninth inning. Taylor Walls stroked a two-run double in the eighth.

CORONAVIRUS UPDATES… The number of confirmed coronavirus cases in the U.S. has reached 33,326,083 and the nation’s death toll stands at 596,401, according to figures released last night by Johns Hopkins University… The White House announced yesterday that the U.S. has begin sharing surplus COVID-19 vaccine doses with the rest of the world. Roughly a third of the 80 million COVID-19 vaccines that President Joe Biden has pledged to provide internationally this month “without expectation of political favors in return” were shipped yesterday. The shipments are being made under the COVAX international vaccine-sharing program, Biden said, with some 6 million doses in the initial shipment going to Latin America and the Caribbean, about 7 million doses to South and Southeast Asia and roughly 5 million to Africa. The remaining doses, amounting to just over 6 million, would be shared among countries that include Canada, Mexico, India and South Korea.

BIDEN EXPANDS CHINESE INESTMENT BAN… President Joe Biden yesterday signed an executive order that expands the ban on U.S. investment in Chinese companies deemed national security threats. An executive order signed by former President Donald Trump in November prevented U.S. investors from trading stock in companies associated with the Chinese military, defense and surveillance technology firms. Biden’s order designated 11 additional Chinese firms that U.S. investors are prohibited from trading with, bringing the total to 59.

CAPITOL ATTACK CAUSED $1.5M DAMAGES… The January 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol caused $1.5 million in damages, according to the Justice Department. The figure was disclosed during the prosecution of a Florida man who pleaded guilty on Wednesday to one count of obstructing an official proceeding. A plea agreement calls for Paul Allard Hastings to “pay restitution to the Department of Treasury in the amount of $2,000,” according to a letter from federal prosecutors.. More than 440 people have been charged in connection with the Capitol attack.

POSTMASTER GENERAL DeJOY UNDER INVESTIGATION… The Washington Post reported yesterday that Postmaster General Louis DeJoy is the target of an FBI investigation into an alleged private sector campaign finance scheme. The newspaper previously reported in September that employees at DeJoy’s North Carolina transport company felt pressured into donating to Republican candidates and that DeJoy reimbursed them through bonuses between 2000 and 2014. Reimbursement of campaign contributions would constitute a violation of state and federal election laws.

TRAFFIC FATALITIES ROSE DURING PANDEMIC… A Department of Transportation report released yesterday found that motor vehicle traffic fatalities in the U.S. rose to a 13-year high in 2020 despite a decrease in overall driving due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The report compiled by the Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration estimated that 38,680 people died in motor vehicle traffic crashes, reflecting a 7.2 percent increase from the 36,096 fatalities reported in 2019 and the largest projected number of fatalities since 2007. The increase comes despite preliminary Federal Highway Administration data showing that vehicle miles traveled decreased by about 13.2 percent in 2020.

‘M:I5’ SHUT DOWN AGAIN
… A positive coronavirus test among the crew has prompted another shutdown in the filming of the latest “Mission: Impossible” film. Production on the sequel is being shut down while those involved self-isolate. “Mission: Impossible VII,” which stars Tom Cruise as IMF agent Ethan Hunt, shut down at the outset of the pandemic in February 2020. In December, audio surfaced of Cruise berating crew members for standing too close together and violating COVID safety procedures. The film has a May 27, 2022, release date.

GRAND FUNK RAILROAD TO TOUR… The legendary rock band Grand Funk Railroad has announced plans to launch a North American tour next month. The “Some Kind of Wonderful” tour kicks off July 2 in Fayetteville, Georgia, and runs through December 3, with more dates being added in the future. The band features original members Don Brewer and Mel Schacher along with Max Carl, Bruce Kulick and Tim Cashion. Grand Funk Railroad is best known for the hit songs Some King of Wonderful,” “We’re an American Band,” “I’m Your Captain/Closer to Home” and “Locomotion.”

CORONAVIRUS UPDATES… The number of confirmed coronavirus cases in the U.S. has reached 33,306,936 and the nation’s death toll stands at 595,825, according to figures released last night by Johns Hopkins University… President Joe Biden yesterday announced a “National Month of Action” and outlined additional steps his administration is taking to reach its goal of 70 percent of U.S. adults receiving at least one Covid-19 shot by July 4. The administration is highlighting free child care for parents while they get a shot, vaccines available at barbershops and sporting events, pharmacies staying open 24 hours on Fridays and free beer from Anheuser-Busch when the goal is met. Data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention data shows that 62.8 percent of the U.S. adult population has received at least one dose and more than 133.5 million American adults are fully vaccinated.

TRUMP DOJ SEIZED REPORTERS’ PHONE RECORDS… The New York Times reported yesterday that the Justice Department under former President Trump seized phone records from four reporters for The New York Times while investigating a leak likely related to former FBI Director James Comey. Reporters Matt Apuzzo, Adam Goldman, Eric Lichtblau and Michael Schmidt had records seized, the Times reported. The Justice Department is believed to have taken similar measures when targeting reporters for CNN and The Washington Post.

CAPITOL ATTACKER PLEADS GUILTY… A 38-year-old Florida man pleaded guilty yesterday to charges related to the January 6 riot attack on the U.S. Capitol. Paul Allard Hodgkins entered his guilty plea to a single count of obstruction of an official proceeding. Prosecutors agreed to drop four other misdemeanor charges Hodgkins faced. Federal sentencing guidelines indicate Hodgkins could receive a prison sentence of between 15 months and 21 months, and a fine of $7,500 to $75,000 for the obstruction charge as well as a $2,000 restitution fine.

NASA PLANS VENUS TRIPS… NASA announced plans yesterday to launch two new discovery missions to Venus between 2028 and 2030. The upcoming trips will mark the first time in 30 years NASA probes have visited the “inferno-like” planet. The selected mission concepts, chosen from the agency’s Discover 2019 competition, are called DAVINCI+ and VERITAS. They each will be awarded approximately $500 million for development, NASA announced.

CHAUVIN SEEKS MERCY IN SENTENCING… Former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin asked a judge yesterday to sentence him to a term of probation or a shorter prison term than suggested by Minnesota guidelines in a sentencing memorandum. A memo filed by Chauvin’s lawyers noted the defendant’s lack of previous criminal history, his previous work as a police officer and the risk he could be victimized in prison as factors the judge should consider as he weighs a sentence. Prosecutors, meanwhile asked for a sentence of 30 years. Chauvin was convicted April 21 of second-degree murder, third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter in the killing of George Floyd. A jury agreed with prosecutors who said Chauvin caused Floyd’s death when he pinned him to the ground with a knee on his neck for more than nine minutes during a May 2020 arrest in Minneapolis.

TV ACTOR ROBERT HOGAN DIES
… Robert Hogan, who racked up more than 150 acting credits during his long career as a television actor, has died from complications from pneumonia. He was 87. Hogan portrayed Reverend Tom Winter in more than 60 episodes of “Peyton Place” and appeared as Louis Sobotka in four episodes of “The Wire.” The actor was a helicopter pilot on MAS*H, a judge on “Law & Order” and guest-starred multiple times on “Gunsmoke,” “The F.B.I.,” “Murder She Wrote,” “The Rockford Files,” “77 Sunset Strip” and “Barnaby Jones.” His other television credits include “Batman,” “The Mary Tyler Moore Show,” “Bonanza,” “Mission: Impossible,” “Hawaii Five-O” and “I Dream of Jeannie.”

SHOWTIME RENEWS ‘CITY ON A HILL’… Showtime announced yesterday that it is renewing the series “City on a Hill” for a third season. Kevin Bacon stars as corrupt Boston FBI agent Jackie Rohr, who was ousted from the bureau as Season 2 concluded. Bacon and Aldis Hodge, who plays Assistant District Attorney DeCourcy Ward are set to return for the new season.

VP HARRIS TO LEAD VOTER-PROTECTION EFFORT… President Joe Biden announced yesterday that Vice President Kamala Harris will lead the administration’s efforts to protect voting rights. The announcement followed Biden’s condemnation of voter-suppression efforts launched by Republican-led legislatures in Texas and other states. Democrats blocked the restrictive voting bill in Texas, prompting Republican Governor Greg Abbott’s threat to defund the state legislature.

BIDEN IN TULSA… During a visit to Tulsa yesterday to mark the 100th anniversary of a race massacre that left hundreds of Black Americans dead, President Joe Biden vowed to shed light on the reality of an event that has been hidden in our nation’s history. The president also outlined actions to expand home ownership and small business ownership in disadvantaged communities. As part of yesterday’s events, the president met with survivors of the attacks on May 31 and June 1, 1921, when an armed White mob ravaged the wealthy Black neighborhood of Greenwood in Tulsa. The violence destroyed 35 city blocks.

BIDEN ADMINISTRATION SUSPENDS ARCTIC DRILLING LEASES… The Biden administration has suspended oil drilling leases in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. President Biden had promised to protect the fragile Alaskan tundra from fossil fuel extraction and the move would halt drilling in one of the largest tracts of untouched wilderness in the U.S. Interior Secretary Deb Haaland issued a formal order pausing the leases until her agency has completed an environmental analysis of their impact and a legal review of the Trump administration’s decision to grant them.

FLORIDA GOVERNOR SIGNS GIRLS TRANS BILL INTO LAW… Florida Governor Ron DeSantis yesterday signed into law a bill that limits girls’ sports at public schools to biological girls. The bill also would allow another student to sue if a school allows a transgender girl or woman to play on a team intended for biological females. The signing drew backlash from many who called it hurtful and harmful, including Florida Agriculture Commissioner Nikki Fried, who is viewed as a potential Democratic candidate to challenge DeSantis.

DEM WINS NM HOUSE SEAT… Democrat Melanie Stansbury easily won an election to fill the New Mexico U.S. House seat vacated by Deb Haaland upon her confirmation as Secretary of the Interior. She defeated third-term Republican state Senator Mark Moores by more than 30,000 votes in a district seen as a potential pickup for Republicans. Democrats held a 219-211 majority in Congress going into yesterday’s vote.

COACHELLA ANNOUNCES COMEBACK
… The Coachella music festival has announced its comeback from the pandemic. The festival will resume on the weekends of April 15-17 and 22-24, 2022, according to organizers. The 2020 Coachella music festival was among the first major events postponed or canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic and it was forced to cancel its 2021 dates as well. Coachella is currently accepting registrations and tickets go on sale Friday.

FOO FIGHTERS TO TOUR… The Foo Fighters have announced plans to hit the road this summer on a delayed 25th anniversary tour. The tour was scheduled in 2020 but postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The 25th-26th Anniversary Tour will kick off July 28 in Cincinnati and run through August 9 in Albuquerque. The Foo Fighters will also perform at Lollapalooza music festival in July and Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival in September.

CORONAVIRUS UPDATES… The number of confirmed coronavirus cases in the U.S. has reached 33,264,415 and the nation’s death toll stands at 594,568, according to figures released last night by Johns Hopkins University… Health leaders worldwide warned yesterday that it’s still too soon to let up in the fight against COVID-19 despite declining infection rates. The U.S.’ leading infectious diseases expert, Dr. Anthony Fauci, cautioned that Americans can’t “declare victory prematurely” even though new cases have fallen to the lowest levels in 12 months.

BIDEN HONORS FALLEN VETS… President Joe Biden yesterday paid tribute to the men and women who gave their lives in service to their country during a ceremony at Arlington National Cemetery. In his Memorial Day message, Biden called on Americans to show more empathy toward one another and unite around the shared ideals America is built on. He also touched on several issues the country is currently grappling with, including voting rights and racial equality.

BIDEN IN TULSA… President Joe Biden is scheduled to be in Tulsa today to help mark the 100th anniversary of a massacre that destroyed a thriving Black community in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Biden will grieve for the more than 300 Black people killed at the hands of a white mob that looted and burned the Greenwood district to the ground. The 30-block historically Black district was known as the “Black Wall Street.”

TEXAS GOVERNOR THREATENS TO WITHHOLD PAY… Texas Governor Greg Abbott threatened yesterday to prevent lawmakers from being paid in response to the walkout staged by Democratic legislators on Sunday night to deny Republicans the quorum they needed to pass a sweeping election bill that was criticized as blatant voter suppression. Abbott, a Republican, vowed to veto Article 10 of the budget that funds the legislature. Abbott has until June 20 to enact his veto and deny the lawmakers their $600 a month and a $211 per diem for when they are in session, according to the Texas Tribune.

MASS SHOOTING FOILED IN TEXAS… Authorities in Texas believe they foiled a 28-year-old man’s plan to carry out a mass shooting at a Walmart. Police arrested the would-be mass shooter after investigators intercepted a message he posted on Facebook. Investigators said the man, Thomas Blevins of Kerrville, Texas, has some “affiliation and networking with extremist ideologies.”

ALASKA EARTHQUAKE… A 6.1-magnitude earthquake shook Southcentral Alaska yesterday but caused only minimal damage. The Alaska Earthquake Center said the temblor was centered 60 miles to the east of Talkeetna and 100 miles northeast of Anchorage. It was felt most strongly in the Matanuska-Susitna Valley and Anchorage areas. Residents reported items flying off the shelves.

RAPPER LIL LOADED DEAD OF SUICIDE
… Rapper Lil Loaded died yesterday by suicide at age 20, his lawyer reported. The rapper, whose real name was Deshawn Robertson, was due in court today for a hearing in a manslaughter case he was facing in the death of his best friend. Lil Loaded’s 2019 song “6locc 6a6y” was certified gold just days ago.

WEEKEND BOX OFFICE… “A Quiet Place Part II” took in $47.4 million to blow away the weekend box office. Another newcomer, “Cruella,” made $21.3 million to finish second. Last week’s champ, “Spiral,” finished third with $2.2 million. “Wrath of Man” made $2.21 million to finish fourth. “Raya and the Last Dragon” capped the top five with $2 million.

The CDC says 62.6 percent of U.S. adults have received at least one COVID-19 vaccine dose and 132,846,983 adults are fully vaccinated. Biden expressed hope that 70 percent of adults with at least one dose and 160 million fully vaccinated by July 4.

BIDEN REMEMBERS FALLEN… President Joe Biden marked his first Memorial Day weekend as commander in chief yesterday by honoring the nation’s sacrifices at an annual ceremony in New Castle, Delaware, not far from his Wilmington home. Biden remembered his veteran son, Beau, who died of brain cancer at age 46 and expressed the gratitude of a nation for the sacrifices of others. Biden is scheduled to attend today’s official Memorial Day observance at Arlington National Cemetery.

TEXAS HOUSE DEMS BLOCK VOTING RESTRICTIONS… There was a stunning development last night in the Texas state House of Representatives, where Democrats walked off the floor and left Republicans without the quorum they needed to approve a voter-suppression law before a midnight deadline. The Republican-led state Senate earlier yesterday approved the legislation, which would have restricted mail-in ballots and other forms of voting. Texas Republican Governor Greg Abbott, who was prepared to sign the bill, instead announced on Twitter that he will call a special session to discuss election integrity.

2 DEAD, AT LEAST 20 INJURED IN MIAMI SHOOTING… A shooting outside a rap concert in Miami early yesterday left two people dead and 20 others injured. Miami-Dade Police Department director Alfredo “Freddy” Ramirez III said three people came out of an SUV with assault rifles and handguns and began shooting into the crowd standing outside a banquet hall rented for the concert. Police said three of the injured were in critical condition and there have been no arrests.

CREWS RECOVER ITEMS FROM PLANE CRASH… Dive teams near Nashville have begun to recover human remains and pieces of a small plane that crashed into Percy Priest Lake on Saturday. The crash killed all seven people aboard, including controversial Christian diet guru and church leader Gwen Shamblin Lara and her husband, actor Joe Lara. According to the Tennessean, Federal Aviation Administration documents indicate none of the people known to be aboard was a legally qualified pilot. The plane was traveling from Smyrna, Tennessee, to Palm Beach International Airport when it crashed and investigators believe mechanical failure played a role.

CORONAVIRUS UPDATES… The number of confirmed coronavirus cases in the U.S. has reached 33,218,042 and the nation’s death toll stands at 593,288, according to figures released last night by Johns Hopkins University… With vaccination rates slowing in California, Governor Gavin Newsom yesterday announced that the state would give out 10 prizes of $1.5 million each to vaccinated residents in the style of a similar Ohio vaccination lottery. Any Californian who has received at least one dose will be automatically entered into the drawing, and recipients will be announced June 15. The state will also award 30 prizes of $50,000 each on June 4 and June 11. In addition, the state is doling out $50 gift cards to the first 2 million Californians who receive vaccinations.

BIDEN CALLS OUT REPUBLICAN HYPOCRISY… President Joe Biden yesterday criticized Republican lawmakers who have been taking credit for the parts of the COVID-19 economic relief law that benefit their constituents despite having voted against the law. The American Rescue Plan received no Republican votes when it passed earlier this year. Democrats were able to pass the legislation using the budget reconciliation process.

SENATE REPUBLICANS THREATEN CAPITOL-ATTACK COMMISSION…Senate Republicans are poised to filibuster in blocking the House-passed bill creating a commission to investigate the January 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol. Democrats need the votes of at least 10 Republicans to advance the bill. The 10-member commission would evenly divided between members selected by Democratic and Republican leaders and both sides would have equal subpoena power. Much of the language in the legislation is copied from the bill creating the 9/11 commission, which passed with an overwhelmingly bipartisan vote in the Senate in 2002.

WORMUTH OFFICIALLY CONFIRMED AS ARMY SEC… Christine Wormuth was officially confirmed as the first woman to serve as secretary of the Army yesterday, following an apparent mix-up that prompted a reversal the night before. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer announced the confirmation had been reversed following the Senate’s approval. Schumer followed up yesterday morning with a tweet affirming Wormuth’s confirmation. Wormuth served as Under Secretary of Defense for Policy during the Obama administration. Most recently, she has directed the International Security and Defense Policy Center at Rand and served on President Joe Biden’s Pentagon transition team.

EXPENSIVE GAS AWAITS TRAVELERS… The highest gas prices in seven years are ready to greet Memorial Day weekend motorists. Gas prices are currently more than a dollar more than what they were at this time last year. The automotive group AAA says the average price for a gallon of unleaded is $3.04; last Memorial Day it was under $2.

COSBY DENIED PAROLE
… The Pennsylvania Parole Board yesterday denied Bill Cosby’s petition to be released from prison on parole. According to a letter released by the board, the 83-year-old Cosby failed “to develop a parole release plan” and must participate in and complete additional programs including a “treatment program for sex offenders and violence prevention.” Cosby was sentenced to three years to 10 years in state prison in 2018 after he was convicted of aggravated sexual assault for drugging and molesting a woman at his home near Philadelphia. The parole board said that Cosby also received a negative recommendation from the department of corrections.

OSCAR CEREMONY PUSHED BACK A MONTH… The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced yesterday that the 94th annual Oscars ceremony has been delayed by a month to March 27. The ceremony will air live on ABC from the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood. The Academy also announced that Academy Awards consideration will return to the standard December 31 deadline, meaning that a film must have a release date between March 1, 2021 and December 31, 2021 in order to qualify. The deadline was extended last year, due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

In March, Biden asked intelligence officials to prepare a report on the subject, with further insights into two possibilities: that it emerged from human contact with an infected animal or that it came from a lab accident.

9 DEAD IN CALIFORNIA RAIL YARD SHOOTING… An employee opened fire on co-workers at a rail yard in San Jose, California, yesterday, killing eight people before taking his own life. One person was critically wounded, authorities said. Investigators say the gunman set his own home on fire before committing America’s most recent mass shooting.

OKLAHOMA AG STEPPING DOWN… Oklahoma Attorney General Mike Hunter announced yesterday that he is resigning just days after he filed for divorce from his wife. The divorce follows reports of an alleged extramarital affair with another state employee. In his divorce filing, Hunter specified that he and his wife Cheryl faced “irreconcilable incompatibility.” Hunter had served as the state’s attorney general since 2017, and was expected to run for the position again in 2022.

FORD DISCUSSES ELECTRIC-VEHICLE SPENDING PLANS… Ford announced yesterday that it will raise electric vehicle spending to more than $30 billion within five years and expects 40 percent of its vehicles to be all-electric by 2030. CEO Jim Farley and other senior leaders discussed the company’s strategy as part of a “Delivering Ford+” event. The announcement sent Ford shares rising to a new 52-week high.

RUSSIA LEADS FACEBOOK DISINFORMATION EFFORTS… A threat report issued yesterday by Facebook claims Russia leads the world in pushing misinformation on the social media platform. Facebook said that of the 150 coordinated networks it has removed for inauthentic behavior, Russia operated 27. Iran followed close behind behind with 23, while nine came from within the U.S. The U.S. was the most popular target with 28 operations.

… Actor Chris Noth will be reprising his Mr. Big character in the upcoming “Sex and the City” revival on HBO Max. John Corbett, who plays Carrie’s former love interest Aidan Shaw, revealed his return last month. Former “Grey’s Anatomy” star Sara Ramírez announced earlier this month that she had joined the cast.

‘SCHOOL OF ROCK’ DRUMMER KILLED… Musician Kevin Clark, who played the boy drummer Freddy “Spazzy McGee” Jones in the 2003 comedy “School of Rock,” was killed yesterday morning in Chicago. He was 32. Authorities say Clark was riding a bicycle that was struck by a car and suffered fatal injuries. The 20-year-old woman who was driving the car was cited, but not arrested. Clark most recently has been the drummer in a local band and employed as a shift manager at a Starbucks.

Administration officials called the figure a key sign of progress in the country’s immunization campaign.

TRUMP GRAND JURY EMPANELED… The Washington Post reported yesterday that the Manhattan District Attorney’s office has convened the grand jury panel that will decide whether to bring criminal charges against former President Donald Trump, the Trump Organization and the company’s executives. The tax and bank fraud investigation by District Attorney Cyrus Vance, Jr.’s office was launched more than two years ago. The grand jury will hear evidence three days a week for six months.

KRISTEN CLARKE CONFIRMED… The Senate voted 51-48 yesterday to confirm Kristen Clarke as the first Black woman to lead the Justice Department’s Civil Rights division. Clarke was a trial attorney for the Civil Rights division’s criminal and voting sections during the George W. Bush administration. She also served as co-director of the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund’s voting rights group and most recently as president and executive director of the Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law.

BIDEN PLANS TRIP TO TULSA… The White House announced yesterday that President Joe Biden plans to travel to Tulsa, Oklahoma, next week to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Tulsa Race Massacre. Political activist Stacey Abrams has been announced as the keynote speaker at a centennial event remembering the 1921 attack by a White mob that killed 300 Black residents and destroyed more than 1,000 homes, businesses, churches and schools. Last week, the last known living survivors of the massacre testified before the House Judiciary Subcommittee on the Constitution, Civil Rights and Civil Liberties as it considers reparations for survivors and their families.

BLINKEN IN JERUSALEM… Secretary of State Antony Blinken met separately with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Palestinian Authority Mahmoud Abbas in Jerusalem yesterday before announcing plans to reopen the U.S. consulate in the city. Blinken said the U.S. will continue giving aid for Israeli security as well as to help Palestinians in the “grave humanitarian situation” in Gaza. Egypt brokered a cease-fire between Israel and Hamas on Friday, ending 11 days of deadly fighting.

MARILYN MANSON WANTED FOR ASSAULT
… Police in Gilford, New Hampshire, have obtained an arrest warrant out for rocker Marilyn Manson in connection with a 2019 assault. Manson, whose real name is Bryan Hugh Warner, is wanted for two counts of misdemeanor simple assault of a videographer during an August 18, 2019, show at the Bank of New Hampshire Pavilion. The videographer, who was subcontracted by a local company to record the concert, was in a stage pit area when the alleged assault took place. A Class A misdemeanor charge in New Hampshire can carry a possible jail sentence of less than one year and a fine of $2,000 or less.

ACTOR SAMUEL E. WRIGHT DIES… Samuel E. Wright, an actor best known for voicing Sebastian the Crab in the 1989 Disney film “The Little Mermaid,” died Monday following a battle with prostate cancer, his daughter confirmed yesterday. He was 74. Wright’s television acting credits included “The Cosby Show,” “All My Children” and “Law & Order.” The Broadway veteran received Tony nominations for his performances in 1984’s “The Tap Dance Kid” and 1998’s “The Lion King.”

N.Y. METS 3 – Colorado 1… Tomas Nido cracked a tie-breaking two-run homer in the bottom of the sixth inning and the Mets made it stand in their win over the Rockies. Jacob deGrom turned in a solid six-inning start in his return from the injured list but didn’t get a decision.

San Diego 7 – MILWAUKEE 1… Four pitchers combined on a two-hitter as the Padres cruised past the Brewers. Jurickson Profar knocked in a pair of runs with a single and a double.

San Francisco 8 – ARIZONA 0… Kevin Gausman (5-0) scattered five hits over five innings and got help from three relievers in the blanking of the Diamondbacks. Brandon Crawford staked the Giants to an early lead with a bases-clearing double in the top of the first inning. Evan Longoria had three hits, including a three-run homer and RBI double.

AMERICAN LEAGUE
Toronto 6 – N.Y. YANKEES 2
… Steven Matz (6-2) held the Yankees to a run on six hits over 6-2/3 innings and struck out 10. Vladimir Guerrero homered with a runner aboard for the Blue Jays. Lourdes Gurriel and Randal Grichuk added solo shots.

Cleveland 4 – DETROIT 1… Indians starter Aaron Civale (7-1) blanked the Tigers over eight innings. Cesar Hernandez homered to lead off the game. Jordan Luplow ripped a two-run homer in the eighth.

Kansas City 2 – TAMPA BAY 1… Carlos Santana homered to tie the game in the top of the sixth inning, Salvador Perez singled home a go-ahead run in the eighth and the Royals hung on to end the Rays’ 11-game winning streak. Brad Keller (4-4) gave up a run on four hits over seven innings in outdueling counterpart Rich Hill (3-2).

MINNESOTA 7 – Baltimore 4… Rob Refsnyder went 3-for-4 with a solo homer and RBI double as the Twins dealt the Orioles their eighth straight loss. Jorge Polanco also went deep.

L.A. ANGELS 11 – Texas 5… Shohei Ohtani blasted his 15th homer with two runners aboard to cap a six-run bottom of the fourth inning and put away the Rangers. The Angels also got homers from Justin Upton and Jared Walsh.

Seattle 4 – OAKLAND 3… Tom Murphy doubled home a to-ahead run and scored in the top of the fourth inning and the Mariners fought off the Athletics. Jarred Kelenic had a couple of hits and an RBI.

INTERLEAGUE
ATLANTA 3 – Boston 1
… Charlie Morton (3-2) allowed just an unearned run on three hits over seven innings and the Braves eased past the Red Sox. Pablo Sandoval went 3-for-4 and scored a run.

L.A. Dodgers 9 – HOUSTON 2… Clayton Kershaw (7-3) took a shutout into the seventh inning and got plenty of support offensively in the Dodgers’ win. Justin Turner homered with a runner aboard. Chris Taylor stroked a two-run single.

CHI. WHITE SOX 8 – St. Louis 3… The White Sox scored five runs in their first two at-bats and never looked back in downing the Cardinals. Jose Abreu added a two-run homer and a run-scoring single. Lucas Giolito (4-4) gave up two runs on six hits over six innings. One of the runs he allowed was unearned.

L.A. Lakers 109 – PHOENIX 102… Anthony Davis scored 34 points and grabbed 10 rebounds as the Lakers held off the Suns to even the Western Conference first-round playoff series at a game apiece. Dennis Schroder added 24 points and LeBron James had 23. Game 3 is tomorrow in Los Angeles.

Dallas 127 – L.A. CLIPPERS 121… The Mavericks got 39 points from Luka Doncic and 28 from Tim Hardaway Jr. in topping the Lakers to take a 2-0 lead in the Western Conference first-round playoff series. Kristaps Porzingis tossed in 20 points. Game 3 is Friday in Dallas.

CAROLINA 3 – Nashville 2 (OT)… Jordan Staal scored off a rebound at 1:44 of overtime to give the Hurricanes a come-from-behind win and 3-2 lead in the Centra Division first-round playoff series. Marin Necas scored twice in regulation for Carolina. The series moves to Nashville for Game 6 tomorrow.
