The Rundown for March 30, 2021

CORONAVIRUS UPDATES… The number of confirmed coronavirus cases in the U.S. has reached 30,331,025 and the nation’s death toll stands at 550,003, according to figures released last night by Johns Hopkins University… Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Director Rochelle Walensky says the rising number of cases and hospitalizations leaves her sensing “impending doom.” Walensky says her fears are based on more contagious variants, more people traveling, and governors reopening their states too quickly… A new CDC study has found that the coronavirus vaccines manufactured by Moderna and Pfizer-BioNTech are “highly effective” at staving off both symptomatic and asymptomatic infections not just in clinical trials but under real-world conditions. One dose of either vaccine prevents 80 percent of infections after two weeks, according to the study. A second dose ups that number to 90 percent… The study suggests that vaccinated people are unlikely to get asymptomatic infections that can be transmitted to others, and that the vaccines are—so far—effective against the new variants seen emerging in recent months.

BIDEN ADMINISTRATION UNVEILS WIND-POWER PLAN.. The Biden administration yesterday unveiled its ambitious new plan to boost the development of offshore wind power in the U.S. Interior Secretary Deb Haaland, national climate adviser Gina McCarthy, Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm and other administration officials said the plan calls for deploying 30 gigawatts of offshore wind power across the country by 2030. Estimates say reaching the goals will create more than $12 billion annually in capital investment along both U.S. coasts and create tens of thousands of jobs in the industry and in spin-off areas. The plan will prevent nearly 80 million metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions, create close to 50,000 direct jobs in the offshore wind sector and 33,000 indirect jobs, according to administration officials.

DEREK CHAUVIN TRIAL UNDERWAY… Attorneys for both sides yesterday laid out their cases yesterday to begin the murder trial of former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin, who is charged in the death of George Floyd last spring. Floyd, a Black man, died on May 25, 2020, after Chauvin pinned his knee against Floyd’s neck on the ground for more than nine minutes. The 45-year-old Chauvin has pleaded not guilty to charges of second-degree murder, third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter. He faces up to 40 years in prison if convicted on the most serious charge.

GHISLAINE MAXWELL FACING NEW CHARGES… Federal prosecutors in New York yesterday added two new sex trafficking charges against British socialite Ghislaine Maxwell, who is accused of helping the late financier Jeffrey Epstein sexually exploit and abuse multiple minor girls from 1994 to 1997. Maxwell was already facing six counts of participating in a sex trafficking network run by Epstein before prosecutors added new charges of sex trafficking conspiracy and sex trafficking of a minor. She has pleaded not guilty, with trial set for July.

SOUTH DAKOTA WILDFIRE PROMPTS EVACUATIONS… Hundreds of residents near Rapid City, South Dakota, were evacuated yesterday ahead of a quickly spreading wildfire that forced the closure of the Mount Rushmore National Memorial. Wind gusts as strong as 60 mph fanned the flames over dry ground but no injuries were reported. Authorities say the blaze began Monday morning on private property and quickly spread into a residential subdivision.
