CORONAVIRUS UPDATES… The number of confirmed coronavirus cases in the U.S. has reached 31,862,375 and the nation’s death toll stands at 569,401, according to figures released last night by Johns Hopkins University… Public-health officials warned yesterday that the threat posed by COVID-19 virus will remain until more of the world has been immunized. While countries such as the U.S., England and Israel have vaccinated sizable percentages of their populations, cases are rising sharply in Brazil, India and other countries. Vaccine expert Bar-Zeev and colleague Dr. Anna Durbin urged federal, state and local governments to take steps to ensure widespread access to vaccinations.

GUPTA CONFIRMED AT JUSTICE DEPARTMENT… The Senate narrowly confirmed Vanita Gupta as associate attorney general yesterday. Alaska Senator Lisa Murkowski was the lone Republican to approve the nomination and prevent Vice President Kamala Harris from having to cast a vote to break a 50-50 tie. Gupta, who led the Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division under the Obama administration, joins Attorney General Merrick Garland and Deputy Attorney General Lisa Monaco in leading the Justice Department.

ARIZONA GOVERNOR SEEKS EMERGENCY DECLARATION… Arizona Governor Doug Ducey yesterday urged President Biden to declare a national emergency at the border in response to the migrant crisis. He made the request a day after deploying 250 National Guard members and issued an emergency declaration. The Biden administration has repeatedly referred to the situation as a “challenge” rather than a “crisis” and blamed the Trump administration for ending legal asylum pathways.

VIRGINIA GOVERNOR SIGNS MARIJUANA BILL… Virginia Governor Ralph Northam yesterday signed into law a bill that legalizes marijuana possession for adults. Beginning July 1, anyone 21 or older may legally possess up to 1 ounce of marijuana and grow up to four cannabis plants per household at their home. The Virginia General Assembly approved the measure earlier this month. The state is set to begin permitting recreational marijuana sales on January 1, 2024.

COP TARGETED ANTI-TRUMPERS DURING CAPITOL ATTACK… California Congresswoman Zoe Lofgren revealed yesterday that a Capitol Police officer is being investigated for allegedly directing fellow officers to go after only “anti-Trump” rioters during the January 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol. Lofgren summarized an internal investigation into the response during her questioning of Capitol Police Inspector General Michael Bolton. The inspector general confirmed six Capitol Police officers were under investigation for their conduct during the attack. More than 100 Capitol police were injured defending the Capitol.

ENTERTAINMENT
FINAL ‘JEOPARDY!’ GUEST HOSTS
… LeVar Burton, Robin Roberts and George Stephanopoulos are among guest hosts named to finish out the current 37th season of “Jeopardy!” The 64-year-old Burton, who is best known as the host of “Reading Rainbow” on PBS and for his roles in “Roots” and “Star Trek: The Next Generation,” had expressed on social media his desire to host the show. Online support and a fan petition popularized his candidacy.

FANS REMEMBER PRINCE… Fans from throughout the world gathered in suburban Minneapolis yesterday at the former home and studio of the late Prince to mark the fifth anniversary of his death. 1,400 people were allowed inside the Paisley Park atrium while other fans paid their respects outside. Prince died April 21, 2016, of an accidental fentanyl overdose at age 57.

… The Diamondbacks held off the Reds in the resumption of a game suspended in the eighth inning on Tuesday due to snow and cold.

Arizona 8 – CINCINNATI 5 (10 innings)… Josh VanMeter came through with a game-tying pinch-hit three-run homer in the top of the ninth inning and the Diamondbacks scored five times in the 10th to put away the Reds.

PHILADELPHIA 6 – San Francisco 5… Andrew Knapp singled home Bryce Harper in the bottom of the ninth inning to lift the Phillies over the Giants. Harper’s solo homer tied the game in the seventh. Mickey Moniak opened the scoring with a three-run blast in the second.

WASHINGTON 1 – St. Louis 0… Max Scherzer (1-1) limited the Cardinals to four hits over six innings in outdueling counterpart Carlos Martinez (0-4). Alex Avila’s double in the bottom of the second inning scored Josh Bell with the game’s only run.

Milwaukee 4 – SAN DIEGO 2… Omar Narvaez homered with a runner aboard and Jace Peterson followed with a solo shot in the top of the sixth inning as the Brewers completed a three-game sweep.

CHI. CUBS 16 – N.Y. Mets 4… Javier Baez’ grand slam highlighted the Cubs’ throttling of the Mets. David Bote had a couple of hits and four RBIs. Matt Duffy went 3-for-4 and drove in three runs.

AMERICAN LEAGUE
OAKLAND 13 – Minnesota 12
(10 innings)… The Athletics won a wild one to extend their winning streak to 11 games. They scored three unearned runs in the bottom of the 10th without the benefit of a hit. Matt Chapman lifted a game-tying sacrifice fly in the ninth. Matt Olson homered twice and knocked in three runs.

Texas 7 – L.A. ANGELS 4… Adolis Garcia blasted a go-ahead three-run homer and Nate Lowe added a solo shot in the top of the eighth inning to rally the Rangers past the Angels.

Toronto 6 – BOSTON 3… The Blue Jays jumped out to a 4-0 lead after two innings and scored a pair of insurance runs in the ninth to put away the Red Sox. Bo Bichette, Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and Randal Grichuk each had two hits and an RBI.

KANSAS CITY 9 – Tampa Bay 8… The Royals scored twice in the bottom of the ninth inning to upend the Rays. Salvador Perez singled home Nicky Lopez with the winning run. Pinch-hitter Hanser Alberto legged out a two-run triple and Carlos Santana homered with a runner aboard in the seventh.

Chi. White Sox – CLEVELAND (ppd)… Snowfall and freezing temperatures forced postponement of last night’s White Sox-Indians game. It will be made up on May 31.

INTERLEAGUE
MIAMI 3 – Baltimore 0
… Trevor Rogers (2-1) pitched four-hit ball over seven innings and got help from two relievers in the shutout of the Orioles. Jesus Aguilar stroked a two-run double and scored on Adam Duvall’s single in the bottom of the fifth inning.

Pittsburgh 3 – DETROIT 2… Bryan Reynolds and Erik González produced run scoring singles as the Pirate scored all three runs in the top of the fourth inning and held off the Tigers in the doubleheader opener. Tyler Anderson (2-2) allowed two runs on three hits over five innings.

DETROIT 5 – Pittsburgh 2… Jonathan Schoop’s leadoff homer sparked a three-run bottom of the fifth inning and the Tigers claimed a split of the twinbill. Niko Goodrum homered to lead of the third.

COLORADO 6 – Houston 3… Austin Gomber (1-2) surrendered two run on two hits over six innings and the Rockies dealt the Astros their ninth loss in 10 games. Trevor Story doubled home two runs in the bottom of the first inning. Yonathan Daza homered to lead of the second. Dom Nuñez drove in two runs with a single and a double.

Atlanta 4 – N.Y. YANKEES 1… Starter Ian Anderson (1-1) blanked the Yankees on four his over 6-2/3 innings and the Braves cruised to the win. Austin Riley homered for Atlanta.

Utah 112 – HOUSTON 89… Jeremy Clarkson came of the bench to score 22 points and the Jazz cruised past the Rockets. Joe Ingles added 21 points. Rudy Gobert had 19 points and 18 boards.

DALLAS 127 – Detroit 117… The Mavericks took control in the second quarter and held of the Pistons. Luka Doncic scored 30 points and grabbed 10 rebounds.

Miami 107 – SAN ANTONIO 87… The Heat caught fire in the second half and ran past the Spurs. Bam Adebayo led a balanced scoring attack with 23 points.

L.A. CLIPPERS 117 – Memphis 105… The Clippers erased an 18-point first-half deficit on their way past the Grizzlies. Luke Kennard led all scorers with 28 points.

Denver 106 – PORTLAND 105… Nikola Jokic made three big free throws down the stretch and finished with 25 points in leading the Nuggets past the Trail Blazers.

SACRAMENTO 128 – Minnesota 125… Buddy Hield made a go-ahead 3-pointer with 8.8 seconds remaining and De’Aaron Fox added two free throws in the Kings’ win. Fox finished with a game-high 30 points. Hield had 29.
